DL 72 hit by lightening

On DL 72, ATL-AMS 12/23/15, shortly after takeoff, struck by lightening, damaged engine deicer. Circled dumping fuel and made emergency landing back in ATL, all safe, but nasty looking black mark on nose of plane.

Santa better have his elves put up the lightening rods on the sleigh and
keep Rudolph's nose muted.

Very fortunate that other than that everything is OK and it happened at
ATL where alternate equipment and flight arrangements can be made rather
than at a non-hub city - still yet it not going to be walk in the park - sadly
some folks are not going to be home for Christmas timely.

All DL/KLM flights to AMS for tomorrow are fully booked? This should be the time of the year when loads are light for TATL/TPAC, but the schedule cutbacks during this period are making space tighter than usual.

Mostly Indian sub-continent travelers since KLM flies to a lot of major indian cities and december is high-time traffic to India, hence the additional Jet Airways partnership beginning soon. Most of those travelers dont mind traveling on Christmas as fares tend to be cheaper.

Looks like the flight finally left over 8 hours later so it still made it to AMS before Christmas eve.

The plane involved, N810NW, is scheduled to resume flying tomorrow again, so fortunately damage apparently was quite limited.

Blitzen, Shirley.

Lightening is a weight and balance issue, isn't it??

Really? According to Wikipedia and FlightMapper the only Indian city KL flies to regularly is Delhi.

No, as opposed to heavying. How on Earth did you think the sledge was made light enough to be pulled by reindeer?

Sheesh, some people got no idea about physics...
