Deal for E190s, more 739s back on!
The E190 is such comfy ride, really looking forward to these (again)... I wonder where these will be based? Similar capacity to 717 but much longer range if I recall correctly.
As for 739s, I imagine these will be backfilling for 757 retirements and will be flying similar missions. Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will add up to 20 Embraer 190 and 20 new Boeing 737-900ER jets acquired through a new agreement with The Boeing Co. The agreement is part of the airline’s continued strategy to improve its efficiency by adding additional 737-900ERs and upgauging its mainline fleet with the nearly 100-seat, twin-engine E190 jets while reducing the use of small regional aircraft. The order announced today offered Delta more compelling economics over a previously cancelled order that also included Boeing-held E190s. “Delta continues to look for opportunities to deploy larger aircraft, which bring customer experience enhancements and improved economics, across its fleet,” said Greg May, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Supply Chain Management. “This aircraft order is another example of Delta’s unique fleet strategy to deploy a mix of new and used aircraft, maintain low capital costs, and leverage significant capacity flexibility to produce superior returns for our shareholders.” Expected to begin flying in early 2017, Embraer’s unique cabin design in the E190 includes two-by-two seating throughout the Main Cabin, one-by-two in First Class, and large overhead bins and oversized windows. The additional Boeing 737-900ERs will bring the total in Delta’s fleet to 120 by 2019. The aircraft features large overhead bins and audio/video seatback entertainment with 20 seats in First Class, 21 seats in Delta Comfort+ and 139 seats in the Main Cabin. |
Man, the pilot message boards are going to go ape over this. They never believed the contract and the planes could be linked. This proves them right.

That gets the news out ahead of investor day.
Cheap fuel = immediate demand for more capacity (at prices passengers seem ready to pay, that yield good margins), so long as they can find & train enough pilots to fly the planes. |

Did DL have purchase options for more 739's? It seemed like they did but I'm not sure.

I had 21A on a 739 last month. There was no seat in front of it as an exit row so there was plenty of legroom and I was happy to have controls for the PTV and audio plug next to the seat. I definitely want to try out a regular seat to see if the complaints are with merit. The takeoff roll was the longest on a narrowbody I've ever experienced.
Important to note: originally the additional 739 order was for 40 frames before it was canceled, but now the order is 20 additional. |
I originally hated the the new 739, then I saw what DL did to the 752.
Also, compare a new 739 to an old 738 without AVOD. The 739 looks better every day... :) :) |
It'll be interesting to see where they run the E190. I finally caught one on US in August and it's a decent ride.
