Delta rolls out schedule changes pretty much every Saturday, though the scope/impact can vary. During this time, seat maps may be locked out, may show the wrong aircraft layout, etc. while changes are occurring. If you are not traveling immediately, FT conventional wisdom is to wait until Sunday (or even Monday in the case of major schedule adjustments where things take longer) for things to settle down, then take stock of your upcoming itineraries to see what changes have occurred and what changes/refunds you may be entitled to.

You are entitled to a full refund to original form of payment, even for a ticket that was purchased as a non-refundable ticket, if any of the following occur as a result of schedule change:
  • departure or arrival delay of 2hrs or more
  • increase in the number of flight segments (non-stop to connecting, 1-stop to 2-stop, etc.)
  • change resulting in a connection below the Minimum Connection Time for a given airport (do a Google search for "site:flyertalk.com minimum connecting time XXX" with the airport code to find the relevant thread if one exists)
  • any change in operating carrier, i.e. operated by Delta mainline before the schedule change and Delta Connection after the change
    • it is also a commonly-held belief that a change from Delta Connection to mainline, or from one Delta Connection carrier to a different Delta Connection carrier, also qualifies for a full refund -- if anyone has documentation of this, a link would be great...

The airline would rather keep your money than refund it, so they will frequently accept any vaguely reasonable rerouting that you propose. This includes, by policy, changing origin and/or destination within 100 miles, rebooking +/- two days, and changing outbound/return date to keep the length of the trip the same post-rebooking.

If none of the above conditions for a refund is true, you may still be entitled to a free change -- in your trip summary there will be a notice about changes/refunds, and per the "conditions apply" popup link in that text:

If a Delta schedule or routing change has delayed your departure or arrival by more than one hour, you may be eligible to select an alternate flight at no additional charge. Note that the below conditions may apply:
  • Your origin, destination and travel date must remain the same
  • Alternate flights must be available, and you can only modify once as subsequent changes may result in additional fees
  • Voluntary changes to other flights not impacted by a Delta schedule change may result in additional fees
If possible, you may wish to try modifying your flights online first -- there have been data points where the site allowed a free rebooking even though it did not technically fall into the above categories. NOTE however that self-rebooking online is known not to work if you have (1) any trip involving upgrade certificates (whether cleared or not), (2) if you have self-upgraded by picking an upgraded seat that said FREE (instead of waiting for the automated upgrade system sweep to reseat you in an upgraded seat), this seems to inhibit self-rebooking as well.

Otherwise, suggested best practice is to research your preferred alternative rebooking beforehand (whether DL flight search, Google Flights, ITA Matrix etc.) so that you can speak with an agent already knowing what you want, and ask for it; this will be much more efficient than having an agent find alternatives for you.

Other notes/FAQs:
  • Even if you voluntarily choose a preferred rebooking, you have a high likelihood of success claiming Original Routing Credit since the original reason for the change was involuntary.
  • If you booked through a travel agency, including online travel agencies (OTA) such as Expedia, Chase Ultimate Rewards, etc. you will have to contact them, not Delta, to request rerouting if the automatic rebooking is not satisfactory to you.
    • There have been reports of an agency insisting that a change of 2 hours was required (per the "pro" site) for a free change, even though the popup on the DL site says 1 hour
    • You can sometimes get Delta to take over a travel agency ticket; this is subject to a $50 fee to take over the ticket, although sometimes agents decline to collect it

Delta schedule change on both outbound and return flights for a trip in September. When I go to see alternatives it tells me I need to text a help representative, Booked through Delta, is this common now?

The online change tool has worked on most of my itineraries this year, but not all. Figure out what new itinerary you'd like then call and it should only take a few minutes for the agent to take care of it. Trust me, calling is much much better than texting. If you do it on a weekday morning you'll likely get a shorter wait time.

SCS is in full swing for fall itineraries today - have a couple WKs when I pull up reservations in pnr.sh ("Schedule change of a confirmed segment" according to travelport). What's interesting is that "Medallion Upgrade Requested" also gets removed from DL's data and something called "DuplicateSCList" shows up under flags.

dl.dumb is even refusing to load one of the reservations!

I've had a few schedule changes this weekend and now I have been on the phone for two hours to sort it out (the wait time was supposed to be 32 minutes when I connected). The phone was picked up after one hour (Sunday morning US time), but after hearing my story, the agent redirected me to the ticketing department and put on hold. Now I am waiting for the ticketing department to talk to me, with no information about the remaining time on hold. It's a little surprising to me that the agent cannot perform ticket changes. In any case, since I am calling from Poland using Skype, it seems that I can also contact KLM to take care of the change, as Delta lists the KLM service center number as their contact number for Poland. I did some searching online and it turns out some passengers managed to have their DL-stock tickets changed by calling KLM, which were then reissued on KLM stock. I guess KLM could be quicker to answer the phone, but are there any disadvantages of having a Delta ticket reissued by KLM and getting a KLM ticket number afterwards? Will Delta be able to modify this reservation if there are more schedule changes in the future?

Well I just logged into see if more changes happened to my Res. and yes they did. But mostly for the better at least an hour connection time now at LAX and MSP, I did lose my D1 ride on a 767 from LAX to ATL it is now an A321.

I'm sure it will change again still 3 months from flying.

Thanks for reminding me to check; my September DTW-CUN flight switched from a 737-900 to an A321 - this is generally a good thing, but my seat assignment was row 12, which is the row with no windows. I switched us to 13E/F, which is the pair of seats in the exit row.

Looks like SLC-YYZ was axed in this most recent schedule change, at least certain days. I was rebooked SLC-DTW-YYZ.

Wonder what else got cut yesterday.

This change covered flights at least as far out as Christmas. Noticed my DCA-ATL has been cancelled on 12/25. Going to have to call in to get on a more convenient flight than the one Delta automatically moved me to.

They keep removing flights from Knoxville which is annoying. First they got rid of Minneapolis this May, now it looks like LaGuardia will be cut from 12/31. United ended their nonstop service to Newark as well which leads the only option now Allegiant which only flies a few days a week to NYC from Knoxville. Wonder why they would cut such a good flight? Both MSP and LGA were always full.

They are just holiday related reductions. Route does not operate on 11/24, 12/24, 12/25, 12/31, and 1/1. Otherwise, LGA-TYS remains 3x daily on weekdays.

Appears they're cutting JFK-ATH middle of January - I was on it and they re-routed me through AMS.

Ouch! A lot of significant changes today after last Saturday’s status quo long weekend. A lot of my fall flights changed/canceled this morning including a Labor Day weekend trip I booked 8 months ago. Check your September to November bookings.

got email on Sun for changes to a SkyBonus D1 award ticket (SFO-LAX-BOS/JFK-SEA-SFO) where the originating flight got promoted from 1220 to 1050 ... we're now on SFO-JFK-BOS departing at 0800, which is a 36J 763 on the TCON and *much* better in terms of arrival time into BOS

Just a little anecdote. My husband and I won't fly together without our daughter. Just a weird little thing that I insist on doing which I know is overkill.

However, we both are flying to Vegas in September - I'm on Delta and he is on JetBlue. We booked our flights in mid-June. My schedule on both legs has changed no less than 4 times already. His hasn't changed at all.

I should add that mine keeps changing for the better so I'm not complaining but genuinely curious.

Is this endless schedule churn just a Delta thing?
