DXB-ATL Final Flight
Anyone interested in taking the final flight of DL7 on 2/11/6? I don't imagine it's going to be a celebration but it's one of the longer hauls that's coming to an end
Little over 17hours. RT from California is $1100 right now.

I don't remember the details, exactly, but, back when there was chatter about the last B747-200 flight, a group here looked into chartering one for a "DO". I seem to think it was something like a$100K~ for a day trip from somewhere to SEA to take a Boring tour - - or something along those lines. Maybe someone else remembers it better than me!

Marginally? Probably not. Some jet fuel, meals, and a few hours of crew pay. But when you consider all the other costs associated with running an airline, over time it may very well not be.

I was referring to the fact that they are coming to ATL from Cali then Dubai . For $1100. I imagine a 777LR takes a lot of fuel to make it to Dubai.

I recall Richard Branson saying back in the late 90s that a fully loaded 744 had about a $1M in revenue (PAX + Cargo). I would assume DL has expectations significantly higher than $140K for a 777.

Assuming $140K revenue is the RT number (I hope nobody pays $1100 for a OW coach seat).
OW fuel is what, 30K gallons? That is $120K right there.
Add in airport fees and labor and you are likely looking at a marginal loss before even looking at equipment.

$1100 r/t works out to $550 each way, or $140K each way for all 254 seats. The exact figures vary, but it looks as though the 777 burns around $9-10K in fuel alone per flight hour. So on a 14 hour flight to DXB, the flight will burn that $140K in fuel alone. Then you have to factor in other costs, including flight crew pay, indirect employee pay (such as the GAs, baggage crews, fueling crew, etc.), meals, wear and tear that has to eventually go to cover scheduled and unscheduled MX, acquisition cost of the aircraft, taxes, landing fees, gate fees, crew layover lodging, etc.

I doubt many flights are 'sustainable' if all seats are calculated on the lowest available economy fare 3 months out. Premium seats and cargo are often bigger money makers, as well as last-minute fares.
You can buy a RT from LAX-SYD for around the same price, it doesn't mean that route is unsustainable.
