Upgrade on LAX-JFK Question

The flight says not upgrade eligible, but right now it is showing more first class seats available than coach. What happens to the open FC seats if they don't sell?

Unless you're flying at a really odd time, the seats will be filled but probably not by you unless you use a RUC.

Yes, or other elites using RUCs. What day of the week? Holiday period?

Any OPUPs will first go to DMs.

Nonrevs will get any remaining seats up front unless the flight is oversold or exactly sold out.

The only people they'll upgrade from coach are:

1. Anyone using an RUC.
2. After that, if there are more people who have confirmed space in coach than actual seats in coach, DL will upgrade exactly enough people to make that not the case any more.

Otherwise, the non-purchased J seats will go out empty or have non-revs in them, no matter how many empty seats there are.

They stay empty, just like international flights.

If coach oversells, they'll do op-ups, just like international flights.

Are diamond medallions no longer given upgrades on these flights?

Regarding complimentary, space available upgrades, that is correct.

That's right. They went from none, to Platinum + Diamond, to Diamond only, to nobody (but started accepting RUCs when they went to nobody).

Or was there another status in between two of those?

That would be the status before "none", when it was "all" (though in practice the upgrade was tough)...and that change drove people over to AA.

And when GUCs were introduced you could use them on this route, I believe.

Don't forget that some of this (the DM only period) was unpublished, with some people appearing on the upgrade list automatically at about T - 6 hours and others not.

Don't forget that old SWUs could be used on the route.

Wasnt it un-published for the PM+DM period as well? I flew a few times (while PM) where I had to call in because the agents at check in insisted no one at all was eligible for upgrades.

Possibly. I've never been a PM.
