My connection flight left without me and my family. Our flight landed about 10 minutes late. They did not hold the flight. It was lax to slc then I was supposed to go to OKC. They decided to put me on a flight the next day to ATL and then to OKC. Talk about screwing up my trip. I'm losing an entire day.

What would you all recommend? Worth writing a letter? What should I expect for compensation. This leg of my flight is part of a 5 leg trip covering 6 weeks as we visit family. We are expats who work in Asia and this ticket cost me $1800 per person for my family.

If missing a connecting flight will screw up your trip, minimize the risk of missing a connection by booking a longer connection the next time you purchase air travel.

They paid for your accommodations and food, which doesn't often happen.

You might expect 5000 Skypesos each. Don't know if that is any good to you. I doubt you'll get much more.

They gave you food and hotel and accommodated you on the next available flight. If the reason for the delay was weather than you've already lucked out and I wouldn't push it. How long was the scheduled connection? A ten minute delay on an arrival generally won't cause a misconduct.

Either way they might throw you a few miles but I wouldn't expect much.

No airline is going to hold a departure for late-arriving passengers. If they got you to your destination on later flights, there really isn't much to write a complaint about.

My guess is arrive 1:09 PM, leave 1:55 PM. But there's a 9:55 AM flight that would be better the next morning than a connection.

There are a couple of connections later than 1:55 PM (3:00 PM and 11:45 PM).

What airline was your incoming flight? How could you miss a flight if the incoming was only 10 minutes late? Is there another part to the story? Was the incoming TPAC? Did you get hung up in Customs? Were both flights on same ticket? Same airline?

More info and you'll get less guessing.

I worked ex-pat half my career. It didn't take long to figure out that I had to make allowances for late arrivals, etc. and learned not to make short connections. For 6 legs including TPAC you've got a fairly low ticket price. Lower the fare, less likely they are to help you out in a delay.

DL's contract is simply to get you from origin to destination including the official stopovers on your ticket. No compensation is required, nor will it help to ask for compensation. However, if the delay was DL's fault (for example, a mechanical delay rather than weather or ATC), DL will probably toss a small number of miles at each passenger as a customer service gesture.

Your OP sounds like DL did provide a hotel room, which is more than they are required to do.

Were you the couple who was yelling at the Red Coat in D concourse at SLC Sunday night because he didn't hold the entire flight for you? This couple was cussing and being ridiculous. I hope it wasn't OP.

NO! Not even close. I am the exact opposite. Very calm and try to make the best of the situation.

What were the details of your flight and connection... ie how long was the scheduled connection and did they give a reason for your inbound delay?
Also did they provide a hotel or anything, or were you on your own for that?

Generally SLC has tighter connections but is also an easy airport to make tight connections.

OP said LAX to SLC. That clearly isn't TPAC.

Was this the DL2004/ DL4638 connection? That is scheduled to arrive SLC at 19:29 with a connection outbound to OKC at 20:05. 36 minutes. And on June 22, it arrived about 30 minutes late.

If this was your booking, you made a significant gamble with such a tight connection. It can be done (I will do so if travelling alone on urgent business, but only if there is a later departure on the same day where my status may have some pull to get me on standby).

Best approach, especially with family in tow, is to have at least one hour at each layover point, and also best not to rely on the last flight of any given evening.

You aren't supposed to book flights with tight connections, as you will have a missed connection about one time in five. You need to take this into consideration when booking the flight.
