JFK/LAX F seats question

What will happen if say 5 F seats still empty when boarding is finished?
Will the redcoat pull PM/GM up?

Strictly speaking, once you board, you lose your place on the upgrade list. However, it's not uncommon for the gate agents to pull people up. They're not required to, and they won't if they're at risk of a late departure.

Not a DM, so not on the list anyway.

However, OP is referring to LAX-JFK product, which is not available for complimentary medallion upgrade.

Generally the only reason anyone aside from a Diamond Medallion would get a free upgrade on this route would be for an operational upgrade (op-up). An op-up happens when coach is oversold and the airline would rather upgrade someone than ask for (& compensate) volunteers or deny boarding (& compensate in cash according to FAA rules).

The other (rare) possibility would be as a customer service gesture if you had experienced some trouble that was DL's fault and an agent was trying to make it up to you (like a severe delay or re-route).

Delta would rather fly with empty seats then start a pattern of giving away expensive seats without a good reason.

I do think that it would be a nice gesture to upgrade other elites if space is still available after DMs clear. Empty seats on the transcon routes are quite rare, however, so this would almost never happen.

Then the GAs would need to rank PMs on the flight somehow. They're not on the upgrade list for these flights.

The empty seats will either remain empty, or go to nonrevs who were on standby for the flight.
