Flights ex-PHL 14 MAY 2015

Anything weird going on at PHL right now?

I'm looking at flights out this afternoon and DL.bomb is returning zero nonstop flights to ATL (where I'm trying to go) - though when I pull them up via SDC screens the seatmap is showing many seats available in F and Y (i know, not reliable, but...).

Tried a couple other options. Same thing for BOS - connections only. NYC airports returning no results whatsoever.

Perhaps they're just sold out...but seems particularly odd.

Knowing PHL, there's probably a forecast for a cloud in the sky, which would bring the whole airport to a crawl. DL knows this and is preparing accordingly.

(Seriously, I have no idea.)

LOL. I'm actually almost directly across the river from PHL right now and there are zero clouds anywhere in sight. Perhaps they are also unsure of what to do with too much sunlight.

On the reverse, ATL-PHL nonstops have plenty of tickets for sale...I guess nobody actually wants to go to PHL for the weekend.

Actually, it is the single cloud over JFK that prompts the spillover effect that shuts down PHL.

A lot of the afternoon flights to ATL are Mad Dogs. Perhaps they are truly sold out.

Don't forget, AMTRAK is still shut down in the NE Corridor. Although, I can't imagine people thronging to fly PHL to BOS via ATL.

I think you are correct, and given the options, I think people will fly PHL-ATL-BOS. The shutdown impacts a huge number a travelers and there are no other reasonable options, e.g. most business travelers will fly, even if needing to connect, rather than take one of the bus services (which are packed to overflowing right now). There is limited air service between PHL and NYC as well, as most people take the train.

Derp...of course. As I was thinking, of course the NYC sellout makes sense. But I completely forgot that nonstops to hubs would also sellout as people then spilled on to the connecting flights up there.

It is the AMTRAK train disaster... NYC to DCA is also going to be very stressed. One site suggested that DL was putting on extra flights or operating with larger aircraft.

Reminds me of the times around holidays (Thanksgiving mainly) where the northeast shuttles used to get extra sections with L-1011s.

PHL to JFK is sold out today and looking very busy tomorrow.

I am glad I looked. Just found out that DL now has either a CRJ700 or a CRJ900 on one of the flights each way between PHL to JFK... but a $600 to $800 RT fare.

Things seemed normal at PHL today to me, but my flight to ATL left around 8:30 AM. It was almost full. There was an empty coach seat next to me.

For short east coast destinations, I would expect everything to be sold out because AmTrak isn't running.

However, there's a thread in the BA forum about a flight PHL-LHR that's been delayed by a day. That, combined with the experience reported here, suggests to me that severe weather might be expected.

I wonder how much experience the people who write stories like this have buying plane tickets at the last minute...

and it's been years since I was last on a flight that wasn't packed...

It would be interesting to compare walk up fares now with what they are in a couple of weeks
