CRJ-900 damaged after the tail strikes the DTW terminal

So this happened today, flight 3443 from Detroit to Chicago:

The plane's tail whacked into the terminal building while it was leaving the building. According to the story, it happened after the tug was disconnected, but I don't see how that could have happened.

Is an out-of-commission CRJ-900 a good thing?

Interesting. Any damage to the terminal?

I was thinking the same thing until I saw the picture of the gate area. That is cramped.

I'm thinking the tug pushed the plane's tail into the building.

If the story is accurate and the tug was disconnected, I was thinking that perhaps the tug had over/under rotated the plane and when the pilots corrected the clipped the wall. Either way, would not want to be in the shoes of anyone involved.

No; but if this had been a 200 it would have cause for celebration.

That's near the walkway to luggage claim, check in and the bridge to the ground transportation center, I think they stopped using A43 because the fumes were getting into the tower.

Has A43 ever been an operating gate? Passenger assistance has been at A41/43 for quite some time.

Plus, those gates have been used for RJs for a short time. I can't imagine a DC-9 or somthing bigger parking there before.

I just saw the thread and would have said 200 is a need for celebration. Many of my routes have 200's on them. I wish they would go.

It was when they first opened the place and they used to bring 9s in.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post that a CRJ-200 out of service is a good thing.

That was one of the newer CRJ900s. The ship number is 15xxx, I can't seem to make out the rest.

Funny, because my first thought was, "too bad it wasn't a 200!!!"
