Bill Evans of WABC may be a great guy, but he doesn't know what he's talking about.

TV is saying LGA is closed to 7PM -- I wonder how many people are stuck on planes on the tarmac, could be an issue if a plane left a gate and another one pulled in.
Also, Delta dot dumb shows 1086 "arrived" on time.

We have two more recent reports. An aircraft was cleared to depart at 1600Z from runway 4 and at the time given landing RVR of 4500 ft. Another aircraft asked for a wind check at approximately 16:00:25 (and presumably that was DL1086 who asked, not sure) and the wind then was 020@10. That would be a 4-knot tailwind component.

This picture gives you an idea just how close this incident came to being a lot worse.

Live update on airport status (real-time over scanner) Airport Ops trying to re-open Rwy 4/22 once they can clear the adjacent taxiways of ground vehicles, first responders & media, etc. to resume some/limited operations once some cleanup is done. NTSB en route as standard protocol - press conference pushed back to 1:30 PM local. Officially, airport closed until 7 PM.

True to FT's one-bag Ninja spirit, a few seen on live video walking off the wing exit with their backpack & cabin bags, ready to go (one with a relatively heavy one)

Reports are that the pilot said that at least 1000 gallons may have spilled.

Well, I don't know if you are a pilot or understand METARs, but these are the actual reports coming from LaGuardia at 1024AM/1051AM/1122AM/1131. I have also heard the actual ATCT recording and the landing clearance winds are 03009KT.

According to one of the first responders, the left side wing punctured and was dropping fuel. This would seem to make sense with the photo. Right side wing looked like it was mangled too. Wings can be repaired, but that photo makes it look like the plane's spine may be sagging too. If that's the case, Delta's MD-88 fleet would likely drop by one. But hard to tell at this point.

Seriously, Delta should be more careful with their better aircraft. They don't make aircraft as comfortable and beautiful as the MD-80 anymore.
This is Delta's second crash at LGA. They're going to catch up with US Airways soon...
