DL 200 Diverted

It appears that DL 200 ATL-JNB was diverted to SJU last night or this morning (apologize having difficult time following the DL flight status). Any idea on how to find out if the diversion was due to mechanical or some other reason? Or what time did diversion happen?

Using the flight aware website, it appears the plane was well east of SJU and had to back track to SJU for some reason.

Hmm, ask Delta?...

Hi,

From flightradar24 (link), it looks like the flight turned around at +/- 5:15 GMT (after taking off at 01:37 GMT).

SJU was probably the closest airport that could host a 777, and also close enough to ATL to fly in parts if required.

As for the reasons, I'm sure DL had a reason.

Cheers,

looks like it will be leaving SJU for JNB at 1530 hours this afternoon. As for the reason, who the heck knows? Probably mechanical as anything else, like a medical reason, wouldn't necessarily cause such a lengthy delay.

Of course, 201 is delayed by nearly 15 hours but at least there are two options to get people out on time still. Via CDG or via AMS

Apparently I'll passenger and then further delayed to replenish oxygen bottles. Son was on flight and he is not happy as delta did NOT provide accommodation etc due to lack of availability...seriously? And now have sent 15000 miles as compensation.

What accommodations were available? If your son was able to find a room, he should definitely submit the receipt to DL or his travel insurance, particularly when DL stated that the reason was that no accommodations were available.

DL JNB-ATL diversions to SJU aren't all too rare. They're usually fuel stops.

However, this is the first ATL-JNB diversion to SJU I've heard of.

I'd be surprised if a diversion that early into an ultra-long flight didn't require a fuel dump.

It's a little hard to tell what's going on by flightaware, flightview, & even DL.com. It looks like it's been delayed somewhere around 14 hours~ish. Could you tell us some more details? Were the pax allowed off the plane? Any food offered? Those flights (I hear) are usually full. Was it a packed B777? If so, that's a lot of people for an odd station like SJU to hafto deal with suddenly, I'd say.

so, this really isn't the fault of DL if the delay was in fact due to medical reasons. Therefore, Delta accommodating your son with a free hotel room really isn't the responsibility of Delta.

Wow....did not expect this when I first asked the question. It appears DL200 will not leave SJU until this afternoon. Since my wife and I have booked DL200 for later this year, I have followed it when have time on flightaware and have wondered about things such as a medical emergency as the flight is so long in flight and above water for such a long period.

Wonder if the flight delay is due to crew rest, although there are two full crews on board?

Have you seen this AMAZING thread from Jan 2013 with 300 posts?

dave.....always great to go back and read these old threads, although I will keep my wife's eyes away from the thread.....lol

My favorite part of a post from the first page:
Apparently when they started descending everyone was asleep and she got up due to being anxious about descending in the middle of the ocean

Trying not to laugh at that one knowing that might be me

Speaking in general about that route, there have been some diversions to SJU after maintenance or other delays out of JNB because the crew was going to time out. This is considered a better alternative to get it that far vs. it not leaving JNB in the first place. I'm not aware of two full crews on board, in previous instances the airline flew a new crew to SJU to bring it home to ATL.

There would be two full crews onboard as that's a 15 hour flight. Crews can work a maximum of 8 hours, hence two full crews for the whole flight.

Also, aircraft in question is N702DN.
