Mysterious Upgrade

My wife and I, both Platinum, were flying DEN-MSP-DCA on 1/5. The flight out of DEN was delayed due to late arriving equipment (ATC/Weather & Mechanical), so we got into MSP about three hours late, missing all flights to the DC area. We were already protected on the first flight of the morning to DCA, and I went to the SkyClub to get boarding passes and a hotel voucher. We were 10 & 11 out of 30 on the upgrade list for an A320. At about 2350 local time, while I was fast asleep, an email came in saying I was upgraded (1A). I went to the FlyDelta app to see that my wife was 9/30 and first was still booked full. I should note that we were in separate reservations. I'm just curious what might have happened, if anyone has any insight.

Unrelated side note, but the mayor of MN was in 6C, right in front of my wife. I guess one of the flight attendants was really doting on him, 'Governor' this, 'Governor' that, so everyone around could hear her. My wife said that he seemed very unassuming.

Sshhh, don't tell the Deputy Diamonds. They will be extremely upset about a potential illegal upgrade and will make a citizens arrest!

After MN voters elected Jessie Ventura and Michele Bachman their elections seems like a SNL skit. No apologies to Al Franken.

OMG. I forgot Al Franken was the MN Governor. It didn't come to mind when my wife told me. I feel like an idiot. I love him from the SNL days.

Okay, so my wife just corrected me. I guess he is Senator, not Governor.

Yes, Al is a Senator. The Governor is Mark Dayton.

I'd be willing to bet you were rebooked into Y and for whatever reason your wife wasn't.

Were you in the same fare bucket? I.E. A "Y" ticket will trump a "T", even though you are both PM's. Also, there could have been pax who were added to the list who had a higher priority than your wife.

You think it's easy being a successful comedian, TV writer and author? A lot of people thought he would be a clown but in his time in the senate he has earned a lot of respect from both sides for being a thoughtful and industrious junior senator. I bet (actually, I KNOW) he has more intelligence in his pinky than anyone who would call him an "idiot" has in their whole brain.

Franken attended Harvard University where he majored in government, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973.
The Associated Press has noted that contrary to expectations, Franken has not sought out the media spotlight: "He rarely talks to the Washington press corps, has shed his comedic persona and focused on policy, working to be taken seriously." In interviews he has expressed his desire to be known for focusing on constituency work, keeping his head down and working hard.

You may agree or disagree with his politics but most people who know him think he is a very intelligent and thoughtful man.

:) I'm not quite sure. LOL. I figured the OP didn't really mean 'mayor'.

This. And sometimes they will rebook you into a Y fare if MX and that's the only remaining fare bucket left in economy that will get you to your destination in a timely manner.

When the agent gave me a printout with our new routing I believe it still showed that we were booked in the 'X' fare bucket, but maybe that only shows the original booking code, not the new one. The 'Y' class booking makes sense, but then why would I have been showing 10/30 on the list when I checked in at the Sky Club? Wouldn't I have been 1/30? The next morning my wife was 9/29.

Maybe only one, not two seats opened up in the middle of the night. Also, my wife had our dog in her reservation as a cabin pet. We know from experience that if she is next on the list for a seat in FC and all that are left are bulkheads, they will not upgrade her. We were flying to DEN last summer and she would have cleared on the MSP-DEN leg, but only bulkhead seats were available. The agent couldn't (or likely wouldn't) rearrange someone else's seat so she could get the upgrade.
