Nevermind...major SNAFU so upgrade was never an issue. I ended up buying up to an A fare. I am upgraded on my return Friday at the window though.

The new requirements won't affect the number of elites until March 1. Now we're in the period with all of the new qualifiers in the herd and none of those who didn't requalify gone yet. The good news is that this is traditionally a period of somewhat lower travel (remember the old "kids fly free in February and March" promo that TWA did every year?), although anecdotally some businesspeople do more travel early in the year, before the travel budget has been exhausted or cut back.

My first flights for the new year are on 1/7 -- DCA-JFK-LAX. DCA-JFK cleared last night and of course JFK-LAX is a who knows. The seatmap shows 15 open seats up front, but that means nothing. But DL is selling I fares so it may be pretty open. In any case, currently in EC (or whatever it is called now).

I'm 4 for 4 for 2015 so far. All four flights on 1-1 cleared (a quick trip to a bowl game). I should quit flying now as the rate will drop significantly as the year progresses.

1/1 JFK-LAX UG at gate #1 for 3 (used my last old SWU)
1/1 LAX-BOI UG at window
1/8 BOI-LAX UG at window then DL cancelled in 1/7
1/8 BOI - SLC. #1 for 0 because of IRROP. Was 757 too
1/8 SLC - JFK. UG at gate. #1 for 2
1/18 LGA-MSP UG at window -- shocked as it was an A320
1/18 MSP-BOI UG at window
1/22 BOI-MSP waitlisted (using expiring RUC)
1/22 MSP-LGA UG 7 days out using RUC (major snafu reissuing though)

1/1 SFO-ATL UG at gate - #1 for 3 seats.
I know it was a holiday and travel schedules are a bit different this was a welcome change as it was the first time I had been upgraded SFO-ATL (typically on the Sunday night redeye).
ATL-SFO next week does not look good as there are only 2-3 seats open per the seatmap and we haven't even reached the upgrade window.
