OFFICAL from Delta: Award Stopovers & Open Jaw GONE Skymiles2015

Just got this from Delta! (link to Delta this info is from)

Stopovers
For Award Travel booked prior to January 1, 2015, one stopover is allowed per roundtrip Award Ticket under certain circumstances. A stopover is defined as a stay of more than 4 hours between domestic flights and more than 24 hours between domestic and international or all international flights. The destination city is not considered a stopover. A stopover is allowed, provided there are no more than two connections between the origin and destination including any connections that are made while traveling to/from the stopover point. The stopover city must be located on a valid routing.

Stopovers will no longer be permitted for Award Travel booked on or after January 1, 2015.

Open Jaw
Open jaw Award Travel is permitted for Awards booked prior to January 1, 2015. To be eligible, the mileage between the open jaw points must be less than or equal to the total mileage flown between any other trip in the itinerary (origin to destination). A double open jaw is not permitted.

For Award Travel ticketed on or after January 1, 2015, all open jaw itineraries will be priced based on One-way Award Travel pricing rules.

Uhh, before we get into the topic, can we not use hashtags on FT? #thisisnttwitter.

How does this save Delta money? Or is this just another mileage grab?

MSPeconomist Nov 17, 2014 5:41 pm

Open jaw doesn't make much difference when one ways are priced at half as many miles as a RT. In fact, one could book it with a double open jaw (open jaw on each end). There will be a difference in change fees for those who aren't DM or PM in that cancelling two one way award tickets will cost twice as much as cancelling a RT ticket.

The big loss is free stopovers, which I've used sometimes to get availability.

The big negative here as I see it is one can no longer add an extra one way flight onto the fron or back end of an award ticket. That was a nice way to gain some more value from your award.

Then why did you use a hashtag yourself? Focus on the topic. Unnecessary to gripe about a stupid hashtag.

Not that they will listen. They don't don't care. If we stop flying then they will just park jets (I have been told to my face)!:(

My story.

Had a ticket DTW-LAX-SYD and CNS-BNE-LAX-DTW

Tried to add stopover SYD-CNS

1st call - want 90k more miles
2nd call - stopover is no longer allowed
3rd call after seeing this post - got the same customer service as the second call!!! He remembered my long name. Told him I got email from Delta that stopover is still allowed till end of year. He did a plea to ticket dept and made it happened. Yippee!!!

Third time is a charm I guess. ;););)

Kinda makes sense to me...
people booking one ways and OJ's and chaining stop-overs doesn't really make sense with the new award policies..

So who loses with this policy? Award gamers...it might be noted that the previous (current) award program wasn't set up to allow a free one-way on the back end of every award ticket..(despite what all the travel bloggers teach)

Lol it was primarily tongue in cheek. My pet peeves definitely shouldn't govern FT lol.

By forcing you to spend more miles.
I'm so happy I jumped ship to UA two years ago, and I've been able to book some absolutely amazing trips using UA miles. While UA has been copying DL on premier qualifying and mileage earning, they didn't copy anything DL did on mileage redemption. I hope this continues to be the case.
