Delta rules

In another thread, I mention that I am an EP with AA, and have all the perks--int'l upgrades, lots of carry on/checked baggage privileges, and an Admirals Club membership. Now I am flying DL-DL outbound to Europe, and KL-KL-DL return. Need to know what it costs to upgrade (cash? miles? both?)to J on DL across the Atlantic, and same for KL return back across Atlantic. Also carry ons? Won't check any. And crown club costs, and KL costs for a one day pass. I have no status with DL nor KL, and I'm currently flying economy.

Is delta.com not available on your internet?

frfl37,

Welcome to the DL forum!

International UGs:
- Mileage UGs require purchasing an expensive Y/B/M fare.
- PM and DM were able to choose the old SWUs that could be used on the Y/B/M fares. The new GUCs are only available to DM.
- There are discussions in the forum regarding UGs ex-AMS.

Club Access:
- I do not think KL Crown Club membership (yearly or day pass) can be purchased.
- Perhaps you need to consider a Sky Club membership depending on what you're looking for.

As mentioned for mileage upgrades on Delta you would need to have a Y/B/M fare ticket +25k miles, and also need upgrade inventory availability. DL doesn't sell upgrades for international, so your only other option would be a buy-up from your coach ticket to the current business fare which is likely extremely expensive.

For DL skyclub, you can get a day pass for $50. Not sure if KL sells access for a day or not. Note that if you have a business class ticket, lounge access is included for no charge.

For the KL side, I should note that their procedures are different. In AMS, they often will offer/sell upgrades from coach for a cash copay + miles depending on what fare you have. Its not really publicized so you'd have to inquire at the check-in desk, so best to arrive early for that.

Just like on AA you get a carryon and a personal item. Not sure why you would need to ask about carryons?

It took me a bit to resolve whether this was Delta Rules(noun) or Delta Rules(verb). ;)

Yes, when I first read the title, I read it as if there were a period at the end.

OP... go to:

Traveling with Delta

This page will provide a number of useful links for you, including to a page that outlines baggage policies.

18sas... alternate title "Delta writes all the rules" :D

Thanks, guys (and gals). I have noted all your info.

Isn't it common practice for KL to offer paid upgrades at check-in if seats are available? This would obviously only apply to the OP's return.

JORBUST Aug 24, 2014 11:49 am

You can upgrade to Business without paying a change fee (usually) by asking nicely or sometimes it lets you do it when you select your seats online. It will be expensive as this is just putting what you currently paid towards the lowest J fare available for your flights.

The other option is to buy up to Y/B/M, which you also can usually do without paying a change fee if you ask nicely, YMMV. Then you can use miles to upgrade.

Finally, as others have said, KLM has a rep for offering check-in upgrades when there is space available.

I agree, Delta rules?

MSPeconomist Aug 24, 2014 3:30 pm

Using miles to upgrade to BE requires not only Y B M fares for international DL flights but also upgrade inventory. Officially the upgrade must be confirmed in advance but YMMV.

I'm not sure about AMS but IAH KLM Crown Lounge sells day passes for $29 last time i was there.

jdrtravel Aug 25, 2014 6:28 am

Just to be very clear: It is nearly impossible on Delta to upgrade a ticket to BE same day of travel, and not so easy to do so in advance.

I am 3 for 3 requesting BE upgrade at the departure check in on DL flights using my GUCs so far in 2014. I felt I needed the "rest" and seat for all segments were available.
