Award calculation: OJ = 2 x OW?

Was playing with the award calendar to see if I could book: BOS-LHR-CPT/AMS-BOS in J. Found dates on VS and DL.
Thinking this would price as an OJ at 80K + 62.5K = 142.5K. However, it prices as 160K + 125K = 285K??

Open Jaw is defined in the international contract of carriage. What you propose isn't an open jaw.

Normal Fare Open Jaw means travel from one point and return to another comprising not more than twointernational fare components and the mileage of the surface sector is equal to/less than the mileage of the shortest flown international fare component; the fare is to be assessed as a single pricing unit using half round trip fares, assessed from the country of unit origin.

Your un-flown segment CPT-AMS is 5997 miles, while your shortest flown segment is AMS-BOS at 3457 miles. Does not qualify as open jaw.

Thanks for the replies. I totally forgot the "surface sector" rule.

I wonder if you can book this as a return routing BOS-LHR-CPT-AMS-BOS, and then calling to remove the CPT-AMS flight later? As far as I can tell, you're saving Delta money by getting back to Europe on your own.

I guess I'll just to wait to 1/1/2015 00:00:01 AM and book the one-way.

No - because you cannot move the CPT-AMS and keep AMS-BOS

When you call to cancel the segment, they will reprice the ticket based
on the new routing. At that point it will become apparent that the routing is no longer valid. Delta is not going to waive a tariff rule to let you do what you would like, even if it were to save them money.

Guess you haven't reviewed the SkyMiles changes effective Jan 1.

As of Jan 1 Delta will allow you to book one way rewards, thus if the OP waits as he say he'll be able to book it.
