Delta Reserve Card MQM Transfer Questions

I am have a delta reserve card and just reached my 60k in annual spend which means no more MQM benefit. It doesn't make sense to continue using it since I will get only 1 point for purchases which is pretty weak. I was thinking about having my wife get a delta card that earns MQM and then gift them to me since she doesn't fly much. I get reimbursed for my current reserve card fee now so the only fee I pay is to give her her own Reserve Card that is linked to me. I believe it is $175.

Any better suggestions?

I appreciate any help!

Thanks

Basically obtaining her a reserve card linked to your account for $175 would do nothing for you as it counts towards the $60K spend you already met. For your strategy, you would have to have her apply for her own reserve account at $450 per year, then obtain a free additional (non-reserve) card off her account and start charging on that card to apply it to her $60K annual limit. Also as I understand any of the MQM bonuses she obtains for opening the account could only apply toward her Sky Mile account but when she reaches the 30k and 60k threshold, she could gift you the MQM. Also the miles earned on those cards would go into her Sky Miles account not yours.

Question transferred to the Delta forum where there is the greatest concentration of knowledge about all aspects of the SkyMiles program, including MQM's earned with credit cards.

+1

For your wife to earn the milesboosts, she needs her own separate account, not just an additional card tied to yours.

That said, if you're not concerned about spending another $60k and would do so already, $450 ain't bad for 30k MQM. LAXRuss is correct on any signup bonuses or RDMs from her card going to her SM account, not yours. She can only gift the MilesBoost MQMs.

Yep, this is exactly what we are doing. Each of us have our own Reserve card in our name (attached to each SM#). Then we each have a Platinum DL card on the other person's account, so that we can equal out the spending on both accounts to maximize the MQMs between us.

This also turned out to be good idea now that DL quit allowing guests for the SC entry.

Yes to all the above. Also you can get the DL Plat Skymiles card for yourself and earn another 20k MQMs for $50k of spending. With all 3 you can get enough points for PM before even considering MQMs from flying, rollover, or business cards.

There's basically two routes you can go here, as discussed she gets a Reserve Card, the sign-up bonuses and RDM go to her and she can gift you the 15k MQM threshold bonuses for the $30k and $60k in spend.

Alternatively, you could get a Business Reserve Card in your own name or you could SkyMiles Platinum Card (Personal and/or Business) in your own name and earn the slightly lower threshold bonuses.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I may just get the Platinum DL card for me and let me wife continue to use her reserve card that is linked to my account. This way I can still get the extra 20k MQM's this year if I spend another 50k and I wont have to change what she currently carries. Thanks again

Just get her an additional card on your Platinum account. It's free and will help you get to your 50k quicker.

Only reason she'd still need the Reserve card is for SC access.

I just called Amex and delta and they said I can't get the Platinum card and earn additional MQM's since I have maxed out on the Reserve Card. I was under the impression you could get both and earn MQM's on each. Am I missing something?

What they told you is correct according to policy. The policy is that you may earn two MQMBoosts per SM# for each 'category' of card (personal/business). You've already earned two boosts on a personal Reserve card, so signing up for the personal Platinum won't do you much good. You could still get a business card and receive the boosts from that, though.

Since that is what AmEx and/or Delta told mlts0807, I'm sure you are correct. However, that is not the way the card rules read to me, not that I'm an expert. Here is the wording in the card agreement so FTers can read it for themselves.

Quote:

Additional Card Member(s) are not eligible to receive miles through Miles Boost; however all Eligible Spending by the Additional Card Member(s) will count towards the Basic Card Member's spend level to reach the Miles Boost threshold. Card Members may be permitted to have more than one Options, classic, Gold, or Platinum or Delta Reserve SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express account; however, Card Members are only eligible to receive one annual Eligible Spending bonus for each type (i.e., Options, classic, Gold, Platinum or Reserve) of Delta SkyMiles Credit Card account from American Express.
The rules for the business cards are identical to this, except the word "business" is added.

You are correct, you are not an expert.

I have the Personal and Business cards and get both boost from both cards.

Stupid question but what are the rules for opening a business card? What type of business do you have to have to qualify. First thing on Application says legal business name.

Hmmm... you didn't read the thread before posting? If you read what I quoted from the AmEx T&C, you'd know what you wrote confirms, not refutes, what I already posted. :D

There's a thread for that. Here you go:

Applying for Business Credit Cards [Consolidated]

Any attempt at a small business will qualify. It does not have to be incorporated. It does not have to be profitable.
