What about Windsor? Is there anything to see/do there?

Not a lot except, as said before, the view of DTW from "the other side." And perhaps, if you like French cuisine, a decent restaurant Française. Also, I believe you now need a passport to cross the border, or at least for the return.

I think I'll check out Ford Museum, looks pretty interesting from their website. If I'm too tired from my NRT flight I may just standby and go home early. Thank you all for the suggestions!

A bit more low-brow than the Henry Ford: for $2 cash each way you can ride a SMART bus from the McNamara Terminal to Southland Mall in Taylor ;) It's maybe a ten minute ride between the McNamara Terminal and shopping mall. Go to www.smartbus.org and view the Route 125 schedule and map.

I grew up in Michigan, and Windsor was the place you went for bachelor/bachelorette parties because they had laxer strip club rules, a legal drinking age of 19, and real Cuban cigars available for sale in many locations.

And I did too, but moved away about 30 years ago. However, I agree with what you have said about Windsor. I also remember going there in the early 80's fairly regularly to buy gas during the "oil crisis" in the US. Even with the tunnel toll, it was still cheaper.

If OP is coming from NRT, I would certainly hope he/she is packing a passport.

Ah, missed that. Therefore, no problem for a Canada visit.

Without NEXUS, be sure to allow plenty of time to return from Windsor.

Personally, I'd opt for the Henry Ford Museum and/or Ann Arbor, which has some interesting restaurants.

There's a small flight museum on a secondary road between Ann Arbor and DTW. I've seen the signs and the building but didn't have time to visit. It seems to be next to some general aviation airport and flight school.

Never thought of that, but a good idea for a short trip from DTW. It's called the Yankee Air Museum. It's at Willow Run, a freight, corporate and GA airport about ~5 miles from DTW. Ford built the B-24 here during WW2.

As often as this question gets asked, maybe it should be made a sticky.

Oh my! I'd forgotten all about Willow Run. Thought maybe it had been torn down. I used to go there quite often in the early 50's when my mom would take my dad there for his business trips, in the pre-DTW(or maybe it was called Wayne County) days. I guess I need to check it out on my next trip home.

Realistically you could just get smashed at the SkyClub bar on cheap Booz and the eight hours will fly by.

When will you be in DTW? If it will be before the 26th I would recomend grabing a metrocab and going to Cobo for the North American car show (cab would probably be cheaper than renting a car and paying the high parking prices downtown). ANd if you still have time after the car show take the people mover or walk to Greektown casino. I love Pappy's bar accross the street from Greektown, great food and drinks

Or if you rent a car just head on i-94 west and go to ann arbor instead. The rental car lots are about a mile for 94. Their downtown is pretty nice. I love Zingerman's deli downtown and there is a great coffee shop accross the street. Mrs Reds and I enjoy the Michigan Theater when we are in DTW
