It's also visible to passengers on other flights and would tend to mitigate the sense that DL has an angry mob because of some delay.

Those award winning airlines aren't always so great in IROPs.
It would have been nice <wishful thinking> if there had been a pizza "room service" delivery to the lounge for BE passengers and elites on the flight. I wouldn't be enthusiastic about "paying" for the pizza by being forced to spend time in a crowded gate area.

The ONLY way this race to the bottom among the major US carriers will cease is EU-style regulations being adopted in the US regarding delays that are the fault of the airline. Pizza for a 7 hour delay for a paying BE passenger is ridiculous. Also, not everyone can eat pizza due to dietary restrictions.

As another poster mentioned, we finally left at 11:45pm. Meal was served around 1:30am in condensed fashion (as the FA called it) - everything came on one tray at the same time, except the main course. It looked pretty limp and unappealing. For main, I had the salmon which came around 2am. It was dry and unappetizing. Overall, a very disappointing meal for BE. The ice-cream sundae (2:30am) was the highlight.
With the help of Zolpidem (generic ambien) I did get a good 8 hours sleep. But I could only really sleep on my left side as my legs didn't fit so well when I was on my right side (I'm 6'). Seat and space is better than the 767 coffin, but I think CZ business on the 380 (hard product) was better.
Amusingly on arrival in Seoul while walking from teh arrival gate, one of the captains of DL159 asked me what pax were told about the delay! Apparently they didn't think they were getting the real skinny from Delta either. I told them we were told it was initially mx, then crew. He said it was actually late inbound and then crew.

Wonder if this is one of the motivations for getting rid of meal vouchers for IROPS. I'm sure DL can contract for pizza at the gate at a much lower cost than giving $10 meal vouchers to the whole plane. Plus it's more visible to pax, and thus perhaps keeps the masses happier, even though they're getting less.
Just give out the damn vouchers and let people deal with it themselves.
