According to this story (per the DL spokeswoman) it was the TYS station manager who called for pizzas. Story also notes they did the same thing in SAV that night.

Delta bought me pizza! (Again at TYS)
I guess it's becoming a trend in Knoxville. My flight MKE-ATL tonight was diverted to TYS because of the storms. I made a comment to a few people around my seat about the incident there a couple of months ago, but was completely surprised when the door opened up around the 2nd hour, and Pizza Hut was brought on board. The FA told us that the station manager at TYS had made the call. I guess pizza is now officially an unwritten benefit of unintended layovers in Knoxville. There were another 5 or 6 diverted flights there as well, including the Paris flight, and I'm not sure if they received the same. Kudos to the station manager, and Delta on this one.
I'm sure the Pizza Hut in Alcoa prays for severe wx in ATL, so they can increase their weekday night business.
Oh, and so as not to leave this post on a positive note, it was all cheese pizza. Another case of Delta cheapening their service

I hope DL paid for the pizzas and not the station manager. A few years, a DL employee told me he personally paid for such.

Delta Serves Pizza
Checked in for my still on time flight from VPS to ATL and walked to the gate. The GA announced everyone was invited for free pizza and coffee at the adjacent gate. He said it was because of flight ,delays today. Thanks, Delta!
