Well, your personnel preference is up to you. But back to the question, there is a difference between what DL MUST do, and what they likely will do.

Just call, state the PNR changed and that you would like to switch to whatever. If they say no, just hang up politely and call again. I might coyly mention both "an hour" and that the early departure is difficult to make (w/o connecting the dots).

The agents obviously have some leeway in these cases. That is why HUACA works.

I would avoid escalating to a manager, as that would be more likely to get the PNR "flagged" if they decide you are trying to game it. This is not a case where you are clearly right, but a marginal case where they might well help you.
