8xxx flight numbers list

A while ago, I found a post on FT that explained what each of the different 8-series flight numbers meant. Some indicated positioning flights, charters, and so forth. I can't find it any more--does anyone have that info?

Generally speaking:
88xx - charters
98xx - IRROPS service recovery with pax
99xx - flights without pax (repositioning, test flights, etc.)

There are exceptions but this is mostly true.

I took a flight from ATL-PHX a few weeks ago...on DL 8777...but it was a normally scheduled flight. I thought the number was really odd because normally 8xxx's are codeshares or charters like previously mentioned.

This would be because it was a scheduled flight from ATL to PHX that turns into a charter from PHX to xxx.

For those of you ever wondering what the Weird flight # is

9000 flights tend to be extra sections (i.e. added flight after a cancellation) or stubbed-out flights when there might be 2 aircraft in the air w the same flight # at the same time. In the latter case it's for DL/ATC use vs. made a public flight number, or some of those flights might be DL123/DL123A to distinguish the difference.

Bingo, just what I was looking for--thanks! I was looking for the same reason FlyingDL4Fun was.

I was on a scheduled flight from DTW to SLC (DL 8XXX) on Sunday Dec 1. Flight not a flight that is normally flown as it departed DTW at 9:00. I figured it was an added flight for Thanksgiving weekend.

If that was the Sunday after Thanksgiving, DL added dozens of flights from SLC to various destinations. There's a thread about it here somewhere.

I noticed such a flight being offered last weekend, perhaps to make up for some of the cancellations on Thursday. I wish I could remember the number: something like 87XX.

I'm on DL 8770 on 12/28 from SEA-DTW. I think it might be an extra flight for holiday's? First time I've seen flight number like that for regular scheduled route.

DL does have NHL charters. Maybe the person who originally posted the list on the other thread was from ATL where we've lost our NHL franchise...twice so it wasn't of interest?

When we got the extra flights due to the football season, they flew in as an 8xxx flight number, and then out as a low number.

Is there anyway to track what the inbound flight is before goes back as DL 8770? Bringing in the Rams to play Seahawks? Only other time DL 8770 comes up as flight # was few weeks ago SAN to ATL.

Can be extra section for holidays but plenty seats choose from and doesn't come up as flight to purchase SEA-DTW on 12/28. They did have 738 with personal AVOD yesterday now changed to overhead video icon

Maybe just random reposition of aircraft...
