To me, this looks like more than two gates.

A couple of timeslots (departures at 1725 to DTW, 1730 to LGA and 1735 to LAX; 1235 to ATL and LAX, 1300 to LGA) will have 3 planes on the ground at once aside from the overnight RON operation.

Schedules will likely be tweaked a little bit further in the planning process.

If only it was also to SLC... I hate DFW and getting there for the 6am puddle jumper to SLC.

I also think it's strange to have no service from DAL-SLC since SLC is Delta's primary west coast hub. Delta could pull one flight each from DTW and MSP to make SLC 2X daily.

Really LAX is their west coast hub. SLC is their intermountain west hub. Once you take LAX out of the feed to SLC, it becomes much smaller. Then there is just the fact that the east is just much larger, especially after you factor out LAX. I am sure we will see many changes on this and I am sure SLC will get a chance at it sometime.

This is impressively ambitious. I'd like to see a couple of SLC flights in there, though. Also wondering whether SEA is being considered for connections to Asia.

More than 2 gates, yes. Which is a bit strange, because to my knowledge, the 2 gates they are currently leasing from AA are the only 2 up for grabs. So they either get them and can increase service when the Wright Amendment is lifted, or they don't get them and all service ends. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think they even have the option to use 3 gates unless they get some from Southwest, which we all know isn't going to happen.

Perhaps they are planning on using some hardstands. They could even use the rear air-stairs on the 717.

But, I would rather go through SLC than LAX any time. The LAX terminal is cramped with very limited food options.

I don't know that you can call LAX a "hub" for DL. It's a significant operation in the system, but the traffic is primarily O&D with a few connection possibilities thrown in there. SLC is a true hub in the sense that it's primary reason for existence is connecting traffic. SEA is well on its way to hub status if it's not already there yet. All 3 have their role in the overall system, which is as good in any in covering the Western US.

On an unrelated note, I was looking at a map of the new DAL terminal. It sure doesn't seem to be designed with expansion in mind. WN and the Dallas airport authority must have a very cozy relationship.

I don't find LAX cramped at all but there are limited food options.

I get your points but those lines aren't very clear ones. Routes like LAX-OAK and LAX-SMF are driving significant connecting traffic. A coworker has been routinely doing PHX-LAX-SMF for a while now. That, combined with codeshares, turn this into a hub (of debatable size) whether it gets the name or not.

I'm sure most passengers would really like that arrangement.

That's because it wasn't designed with expansion in mind. Per the Wright Amendment, DAL is capped at 20 total gates.
