DL.com is returning 160,000 for your dates. ORD-BOM via ATL (ATL-BOM is a "Direct" with a stop in AMS). Return is "Direct" BOM-ATL with the stop in AMS then on to ORD.

You can buy the 10,000 additional miles you need for $350. These miles usually post instananeously (or close it) when purchased.

DL running 160K +~ $60. Problem is ATL-BOM running High for the period. No difference if MDW or MKE.

This late in the game? Not really. Cheapest options of ANY carriers for ORD-BOM for those dates is around $3000 on Kayak. Cheapest Delta flight on Kayak is $3824 (I didn't search DL.com for fares or other booking sites). But even if 160,000 is the "High" redemption rate for Y, that's still a return of 2.5 cents per mile. Could one do better with more planning? Probably. But like I said, this late in the game, it's probably not that bad of a deal, especially if you really need to go.

Did you call Delta CS?
And ask whether they could get you through LHR on VS?

Edit to add: I am getting for 122,500miles + $99.87

Outbound Sun 15 Dec 2013 |6:00am ORD to 11:25pm BOM | 1-stop | Delta 977 Delta 50
6:00am ORD 11:25pm 16DEC BOM
1-stop ATL 8 h 36 m Layover
Delta 977 Delta 50 Economy

RETURN Jan 15, 2014
2:35am BOM 1:35pm ORD
1-stop 21 h 30 m LHR 3 hr 05 min Layover

I assume you mean VS (Virgin Atlantic) as VA (Virgin Australia) does not fly to LHR from any direction.

Have you looked at business redemptions? Often they can be available in low just a few days before

I have in the past made award bookings for outbound the following day and have quite good results for BE awards on this.

For example I checked the OP routing as if he were to leave tomorrow and the DL Award Calendar (OK - I know we cant really trust it) shows leave tomorrow ORD-JFK-LHR-BOM on VS for 140,000 (+$102) with all outbound flights in F or BE (Return is Y on 01/05/14).

Is a gamble I know but maybe try and book the day before you need to go and you may just get a good result - OTOH you may not - YMMV.

Yes, meant Virgin Atlantic!
Secondly for the dates the OP needs there is no getting away from 160k skymiles + taxes.
Regarding the idea that 'suvayanr' made about booking the day before ... given that it is over the Christmas holidays ...not sure that strategy will work especially given the 72 hour rule.

not necessarily the day before - I managed to find a last minute Europe award 5 days out. J was low, Y was high! saved a boatload of miles by checking!

also don't know how feasible it is, but you can also try DEL if you're ok with the fairly cheap domestic segment.

It would probably mean two separate awards, but have you compared the cost of routing TPAC through Asia? If low is available that way, it could save miles over doing TATL with some high segments.

Can you give some samples?
