BREAKING NEWS: 767 emergency landing at MAD

"A Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) Boeing 767-300ER bound for New York had to return to Madrid and blew a tire on landing after pilots received an indication of a hydraulic issue, the carrier said.

According to other news sources, a hole in the right wing was formed. No idea what happened.

Spanish news agency EFE reports "one of the landing gears wasn’t working properly, which caused a small fire that was quickly put out by firemen."

EFE quoted airport sources as saying that a punctured tire during take-off was the primary cause of the emergency landing. A hydraulic problem with the gear may have resulted.

Although the 763 skidded off the landing strip, nobody on board was hurt.

From the preliminary reports it sounds like DL will have to be ferrying a replacement aircraft over there...

The photo looks like the aircraft is leaning on its left engine on the ground. Obviously no slides were deployed on that side. I wonder how the people got off.

Optical illusion? (little forefront hill blocking the view below the engine)

Could be but the fuselage looks tilted to me, like it's just slightly rolling to the left.

Better pics from a passenger showing the plane isn't resting on the engine:

Great pics, thanks for posting. That would be pretty scary if I looked out and saw that on the wing while in flight. Glad everyone's ok.

Yeah, I'd say that plane is not going anywhere any time soon. Something with hydraulic obviously blew apart. Glad everyone is alright.

Wonder how soon the rescue ferry gets deployed?

Will they need to send out a rescue ferry? You'd think they'd be able to handle much of it by re-routing through European hubs, no?

Possibly... I guess it depends on the loads of the alternates. Might've been too late in the evening to get pax out of MAD to a gateway like LHR or CDG.

A 764 (N834MH) operating DL9935 is currently on its way ATL-MAD to pick up the pax.

I think that I flew on it before, but I don't remember.
