Of course they can physically call.....but the reason they will not is it will not matter if they do or not.
It always cracks me up when I see people run off the plane and yell "call my gate"......the agents know who is connecting to their flight. They will not hold, so stopping at the agent at your inbound flight just wastes time as others have mentioned. If I think I can make it I run for it and if I don't then I go to the SC and get rebooked for the next one.
