Interesting. It's been several days now, right? I wonder if the 777 went in for retrofitting for the new configuration?

I would guess repositioning. Either there's a 747 in ATL that shouldn't be there or there's a sick 747 sitting at DTW that isn't going anywhere at its scheduled departure time.

Ok, this isn't a DL 744, but I flew DL part of the way to Australia and took this picture from the ferry traveling from Parramatta to Circular Quay on 9/15. This is QF 64 on approach to SYD, arriving from JNB. If I read plane finder.com correctly, it is VH-OEI, a 14 year old 747.

Looks like that flight number is used fairly frequently for military charters. SEA-Okinawa (A332), Rairford AFB England-DTW (763), and others in the last week alone.

Why is DL flying military charters? Doesn't the military have its own planes?

Widebodies can be called into service by military. Also if you need to transport 400+ soldiers at once a charter works better and costs less generally.

Does anybody know if they will be actively subbing in any B744s from DTW-AMS? This one below ran AMS-DTW for a few days back in August and I'd like to see them run NATL again before retirement! Also, do you think DL will do a B744 run for aviation enthusiasts / replicate original routing like United is doing for their B744?

I'm guessing DL will make a big deal of the last regularly scheduled ICN-DTW 747 flight. But other than that, it doesn't look like they plan to add ceremonial segments unfortunately

If you missed the "last" DL 747 domestic flight and still want to catch a 747 - any 747 domestic, the UA last 747 flight is in November: http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/...t-in-nov-2017/

Fittingly, it's also to HNL, the one US airport with historically more daily 747 flights (all airlines combined) than any other, I believe.

According to the link it is SFO to HNL. Is it on the way to Asia to become a freighter?

Coach is sold out. Business Class is available, but priced at double the other SFO-HNL United flights that day. Front cabin is full, but the Upper Deck is wide open!

Good question mot29 - wonder why they would schedule this as a one way? Maybe an employee only return?
