That's not true. Delta has said they're being retired by the end of this year. Retired means parked in a desert, not set aside for special charter flights.

Such a cool plane.
Air India, Asiana, China Airlines, EL AL Airlines, EVA Airways, KLM, Malaysia Airlines, QANTAS, Rossiya Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Thai Airways, also come to mind as all currently flying the Queen of the Skies!

I know what Delta said previously, but I based this on what a DL pilot told me 3 weeks ago (see my post above). We were specifically talking about the retirement of the 747's, and the ability of pilots to change aircraft depending on their ratings, and he said that Delta had just signed a charter agreement with the military for 2 years of charters with the 747's, so some of Delta's 747 pilots would get to continue flying them.

I'm not sure if a charter agreement with the govmt would be publicized anywhere, so I don't know where to look for confirmation- but it is certainly within the realm of possibility that Delta would sign a charter agreement even after announcing the 747's retirement. Companies make announcements, then changes their plans all the time, just like ordering new planes...

Retirement can mean one of two things...either from revenue passenger service, but still available for military charters, or permanently withdrawn from service.

A bit off topic but I want to take my kids on a flight on the upper deck before they retire them. I'm in DTW and I was looking for a short repositioning flight like DTW to ATL or something like that - Can anyone help point me in the right direction for this quest? DL say only flights are international. Thank you

747s are pretty much limited to DTW at this point, so you won't find a ton of opportunities for a domestic trip on one. DL sometimes uses them between hubs around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My wife had a chance to do a ATL-DTW on a 744 about two years ago right before they switched over to 777 for the ATL-NRT flight. I wouldn't say she was lucky tho. She was flying with a toddler and an infant, had to return to ATL once already due to engine failure and then with the second 744 diverted to DTW to pickup a backup crew to fly the plane to NRT. Then the brakes overheated when they landed at DTW. So they had to spend a night there.

If someone notices a domestic 747 flight on the schedule, they'll post it here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...l#post27623397

There are none currently posted, and I wouldn't hold my breath. There should be some domestic "farewell" flights as DL retires the fleet, but those will be historic flights, and super expensive. You're pretty late in the game unfortunately. At this point, most likely, you'll have to take your kids to Asia if you want them to be on the upper deck.

I looked recently and at the time I didn't find any domestic 747 flights through May, at least not between obvious city pairs.

I flew DTW - NRT last year on the upper deck, and got to sit in the pilot seat and everything. Fantastic crew, incredible plane, I will miss it terribly. Here's some more photos.

unfortunately i'm not heading to asia any time soon, so i'll probably never see a DL 747 again, but i have a flight booked on a LH 747 to europe for early in the summer.

i have only flown those DL 744s back when they were NW 744s.

What's happening to 747 pilots as the fleet gets downsized?

I am going to be upper deck 73A in one of these DTW-NRT this year and I am beyond excited No body compares to DL upper Deck 1-1

I did a couple DL 747 flights and a Couple BA 747 flights in 2016, By Far my favorite airplane.

BA and LH will be flying these into the 2020s and beyond though. Plenty of chances to fly the queen.

I booked a LH flight specifically to fly the 747-8 this summer.
