VDB based on cabin of service?

Curious question:

Let's say I have booked a paid F ticket and F is full and Y is oversold and they will need to solicit VDB volunteers. Will GAs take VDB volunteers that paid F?

I did so for a DTW-LAX flight earlier this year. They just confirmed me in F on the next flight.

This is rare, but not completely unheard of. May I be so bold/rude as to ask about the comp you received?

$400 plus $21 in food vouchers...I was on the next flight to LAX and arrived about 1.5 hours after I was supposed to get there.

I'd already been OpUp'ed LHR-DTW that day, so it was a good trip overall. :D

Usually yes, especially where they have medallions on the upgrade list they can move up to free up a space in Y.

Recently I was offered this, with rebooking into confirmed FC (from an A fare on the original flight) for a delay over four hours.

I don't think it is that rare at all. Has happened more than once to me over the years. The agents want a butt off the plane. Where it comes from is pretty irrelevant. Easy to move someone else from Y to F.

Agreed. I've had this occur many times over the years.

I've never had a gate agent who wouldn't accept F passengers for VDB. In fact, it might be easier to rebook someone ticketed in F if the next flight only has availability in F. VDB compensation is the same as us offered to Y passengers, except maybe a better hotel in hub cities.

If you have an FC ticket (and maybe too are using miles, SWUs, or a full Y fare to upgrade), I would clearly expect and insist that the GA commit to rebooking in confirmed FC. For most free upgrades, it's what you can negotiate but you might lose the upgrade. Be sure you're at least on the battlefield list for the new flight(s).

Exactly. I've successfully VDB'd off of paid F on DL and paid int'l J on AA already this year.
