How can I check the number of first class seats available (to increase my chance of a possible upgrade) before purchasing tickets? What sites do folks suggest? Thanks in advance.

From all I have read you should try EF aka Expert Flyer

But I don't really have a good feel for the program yet... still a noob at it myself.

Seat map is unreliable. You want fare bucket availability data. KVS or EF.

For a free alternative to EF, you can check flightstats.com (under flight availability). You can also check the seatmaps on delta.com, which are not always 100% accurate but are usually a good indication.

It is all route dependent.

Take a look here scroll towards the end of the thread and read all about your upgrade chances.

EF will tell you about FC availability. Delta.com will tell you about 1C availability.;)
