DC9-50... I thought they were gone?

I am looking at an ATL-SAV trip in May and see that Delta would use a DC9-50... I thought the old DC9's were all retired by now. Any news on that?

The last are scheduled to go this year. One would assume timing is based on when the 717s come online.

I think the final -9s have been pushed into Q1 2014 now...not 100% sure.

This thread also suggests possible use into 2014 -- http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...d.main/5651446

Delta fleet list shows 19 are left, but I believe there are only 17 currently in service -- http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...aft-fleet.html

I love those planes, especially the nice big overhead bins.

Correct, the last of the -40's were retired in early Jan 2011. There were 24 -50's at the beginning of 2012, so 7 were retired in the last year.

Agreed. I book them whenever it's a reasonable option, love flying on the DC-9.

Me too. I try to find a segment on them when it fits.

Worked at DL many years ago while in college. During orientation, they showed us a video of the different aircraft (worked in cabin service). At that time, the flight crews called the DC-9 the "sportscar of the air." I have a friend who was just promoted to Captain on DC-9s for DL. Old, but very reliable aircraft.

I remember a couple of years ago, when oil was VERY high, I was sitting next to a DL pilot, he said that even though the DC-9s are gas hogs, since they are paid for, they're cost efficient up to a certain $$ amount per barrel of oil - I don't remember the exact number.

Does anyone know how fuel efficient the B717s are in comparison?

I'm with the folks who have fond thoughts of these planes. ^

Will hate to see them go.

Just like I miss my 1956 Buick Special.

The 9-50 haters can pi$$ and moan all they want but they'll miss that F to Y ratio real quick when they start getting stuck in cattle class on the 17s

How many F/Y will the 717s have, do we know this yet?
