Got one to myself the other night on a 738 with a light load. Built myself a nest, stretched out and slept nearly the entire flight. On redeyes, I'll take this over F any time. I actually got a decent rest in.

Actually did this a couple of times to sit next to a client to talk business. When the person assigned the seat came up and said I was in their seat, I gave them my boarding pass and told them they had been upgraded. After a startled look and looking at the BP they high tailed it up front--against the stream--very quickly.

When flying with my wife, I just offer her the UG. (We've never been booked in separate cabins on a long flight, just short ones.) I had one time I was in F on a fairly short flight (YYZ-IAD) and I wanted to talk sports with my buddy, so I asked the person in Y next to him if he'd swap with me.
This has been covered in other threads, no one has ever reported someone refusing to swap their Y seat for an F seat if asked.
