Each flight segment is 2200. That means roundtrip is 4400. I get Silver with 6 trips, not 8. Also, miles rollover and Amex adds to MQMs, not MQSs.

This does work from NYC or BOS decently well, although it's not worth it unless one loves planes.

It's so cute how you defend and support each other.

I wasn't making fun of you. If segments are wrong I don't want to be right.

It's clear that qualifying on segments allows more time to drink in flight!

OP, if you go back a few years, connecting flights were priced pretty close to direct flights. That's usually no longer the case. If you are flying out of ATL, for example, adding a stop in MEM, CVG, DTW or MSP will usually add hundreds of dollars to your fare. I sometimes try to add a stop in MEM so I can get Interstate BBQ, but lately it's been impossible to do without changing an ~$300 fare into an $800+ fare.
Not to mention if you are really flying for work, each stop adds time and adds an additional layer of risk that you will miss a flight or you checked bag won't make the connection. And each segment, or segment group, is another trip to the airport, through TSA and to the gate, where you have to wait to board. Finally, most of us who qualify on segments spend much more money than those who qualify on miles. Even if I fly four segments per r/t, and even if I get incredible fares of $300 r/t, that's still $2,250 to reach FO. One r/t to BKK is half that, and it gets to about 22k miles. Throw in an ATL-SAN r/t and you can be FO for $1,500 on miles. As someone who averages over 100 segments per year, mostly on direct flights, you should trust me that segments qualification isn't all that easy. I average in the 140-160 segments per year, with an increasing percentage on RJs with no F. (was about 80% last year, about 90% so far this year. Where did all the MDs go???) Segments suck as a way to qualify. Your total transit time to your destination may be 3.5 to 4h and instead of a 2h direct flight, you get to do the <10,000 foot dance twice, so probably 3 of those 4h are boarding, deplaning, taxiing, landing etc.. All places where you can't do anything but read a book. All in a pint sized plane with no F.. |
There are many good ways to qualify for Medallion, and everyone's particular travel situation may lend itself to a specific strategy. Years ago when I traveled very frequently for work, and Plat was top tier, I qualified for PM three years in a row on segments, falling far short on MQMs, even with my 10K MQM Amex boost. My travel was up-n'-down east coast, always having to connect in ATL or CVG (remember that?) with very few occasional trips out west.
So, whatever works... |

that is my biggest gripe. I wonder what will happen with MQD when some of the short haul folks have spent 15k with 90 segments and only 60k miles start complaining.
However, I'm with the majority here who thinks that one size fits all does not apply. It all depends on your travel pattern and home airport as to which makes more sense. |

Some of us have better things to do than waste our workday in transit. Absent giving up your weekend, you really should not be spending a whole day in transit domestically, unless you're on your own time doing it for recreation.
You fools need to get over your rules they only mean something to other so called "EXPERTS" like you. My weekends are guaranteed at home and my day's are fully paid on the airplane or at the office. |
