Where does it say officially that "you board, you lose." On multiple flights to JFK and ATL from LAX, I always was upgraded at the last minute while sitting in economy. even as a GM last year!

Do they really? I've been told multiple times waiting at the gate that the GA was going to go onboard and upgrade a higher elite, even though I was the only elite standing outside the gate and the only one on the list (usually on trips where I checked a bag and just had a small backpack as carry-on).

A Red Coat in ATL and MSP both told me that if you board the aircraft you lose your upgrade. This has worked to my advantage on more than one occasion.

upgrade observation
It's very inconsistent. I can tell you that if you don't board you usually win.
If I'm not part of the battle for overhead space I like to board around zone 8 anyway to minimize my time on board. Many times there is one seat left in First and I am the only one left on the gate display upgrade list because everyone else has boarded. I usually ask very politely if there really is a seat left in first and most of the time I get it at T-10. One comment, I'm usually not the last to board and I never hold things up. If a GA tells me to board I do so with a smile. |

The Red Coats in LAX don't share this view, apparently.
My flit posted Q/Q and the SWU is still there unused. I sent a note to Delta to fix this. The GA did the right thing with the wrong paperwork. At least that's how I see it. As for the wait listed passenger, he didn't seem to happy about this but then again, he did get on the flight and got the best EC seat on an A320 |
