Thumbs down GoGo GoGoing up?

Seems like GoGo is doing away with per-flight pricing on some flights. It's not clear how this will affect pricing on Delta, though the article says some flights on Delta are affected. Monthly pricing seems to be the same.

Maybe they are trying to push the buy before you fly, which seems to still be available.

Anybody noticing a change in GoGo pricing? (Recognizing that most folks here probably have the monthly pass.)

I noticed this on my last flight. Buy before you fly otherwise $$$. Might have to buy a few passes to tuck away but then they are only good for 12 months.

I noticed this on a recent flight, MSP-SFO.

Choices were 60-minute pass ($10), monthly pass and annual pass. Maybe something else to. If you clicked through, you could get a "prepaid 24-hour pass" for $18.

On my first flight, I thought prepaid meant, have you paid us money already. So I bought two 60-minute passes for a total of $20. On the way home, I pre-bought through delta.com a 24-hour pass for $12. I also learned from my boss (on the same route, but an earlier flight) that you can get the prepaid 24-hour pass" and use it immediately.

So, to summarize, it appears the flight passes are going away, to be replaced by 24-hour passes. What will be really interesting is if Delta sells the 24-hour passes in advance at a dynamic price based on your segments or total flight time. And, if you think you're going to use the WiFi, it's generally best to buy in advance. As far as I can tell, the 24-hour pass isn't tied to the flight you buy it for.

I can't find the energy to care about this, until GoGo starts offering service offshore. Can someone explain to me why if you're flying LAX-OGG the GoGo service works fine until you leave sight of land, then is cut off? Can't even service flight across the water to US territory? ...?

This is why I use GoGo when I can score a free pass somewhere, and otherwise I read a book.

Next up, GoGo discount pricing by Medallion tier. Free for Diamonds of course.

GoGo needs to make what they can before free WiFi becomes a reality.

Or they clog the pipes with so many ads, you'll be wishing you could pay to make 'em go away.

Seems to be so, two recent data points:

- ATL-LAS last week was $17.95; LAS-ATL was $12.95.

- ATL-PHL $4/30 minutes a couple weeks ago.

All daytime/early evening flights

Easy. GoGo uses land-based cell towers to communicate with their equipment on the aircraft. No land, no towers.

GoGo just inked an agreement for towers in Canada http://pr.gogoair.com/press-room/201...ty-over-canada, and they have plans to offer a satellite-based service for overwater/international flights http://pr.gogoair.com/press-room/201...al-flight-wi-f.

Basically GoGo's current installed product is not satellite based, rather it is much like a cellular data card for your laptop and it relies on EVDO high speed data provided by over 100 towers they supposedly own. Since there are no cell towers in the ocean, you get service that cuts off when you lose sight of land.

The good news is that their roadmap calls for satellite service in another year or three.

BS like this is why I use GoGo when I can score a free pass somewhere, and otherwise I read a book.

The current GoGo system is land based. The antenna's are situated on top of towers which cannot practically be deployed out in open water. They are working on deploying a satellite based system which will work over water. This system will be installed on DL's international fleet. The technology is quite different and each system has it's own advantages and drawbacks (Satellite systems tend to be heavier, more expensive, and add quite a bit of network latency due to the roundtrip time up and down to the satellites).

I had thought it was satellite already based on the user experience which seemed like long latency.

Thanks and NEVER MIND!

another data point.

Purchased a 24 hour GoGo pass from DL for tomorrow for $12.00. Also offered by GoGo for $12.70. Pass just goes into your gogo account for your use.

So how long until the pass shows up somewhere after purchasing it through the DL trip extras? I got basically no confirmation... clicked on the receipt link but only got a copy of my already purchased ticket and nothing about the gogo pass.

EDIT: Never mind, it showed up in my gogo account also. Took it about 30 min though so was getting worried. haha

Prices went up lately - couple of weeks ago I "chatted" with a Gogo agent to complain about the connections dropping and I told them that i was appalled that they upped the price to $17.95 for a transcon and hadn't improved the service, to which they replied something along the lines of "we apologize, we are testing different pricing in different markets (may have been "from" different markets) and will have pricing finalized soon..."

then they gave me a free coupon for my next flight...
