and technically you also shouldn't get a deduction on the value of the MQMs from DL either, so this should be netted out from the charitable donation for tax purposes, just the same as if you purchase/donate a museum membership or ticket to a charitable event, you cannot deduct the portion of the donation that accounts for the goods and services you receive in exchange for making the donation.

I disagree. You can't redeem MQMs so they have no practical value. I would think it would be akin to donating money to build a monument and getting your name on a plaque.

I would have thought that the tax argument might be that DL is giving you the MQMs, not the charity, so that this makes it different.

In the past, DL has sometimes sold MQMs so that they do, in principle, have a market value (price) associated with them.

There is a BIG difference between someone getting gold from having it gifted from a diamond than getting it from Am Ex usage and rollovers.

What if someone got their GM status from a DM who got their status from Am Ex and rollover?

One might say that instead of earning status by BIS miles, any gifted status from another elite has been earned on one's back.

So not in the seat but in the sack?

Exactly. Why is this more worthy than earning status by whipping out the DL AmEx card?

Only on ones back in a lie flat seat.

Oh oh, I saw this once. At the time, it didn't cross my mind that maybe she was "going for Gold" (Medallion) though. They did have the decency to take it to the lav to seal the deal.

It's funny, before rollover I never thought about splitting my miles/spend, but after seeing this huge amount of rollover miles building up I looked else where.

AA generously matched me to EXP with milage requirement and bingo I havent looked back.

An example, tomorrow I am going LAX-JFK then Sunday JFK-LHR-NCE-LHR-ATL using AA/BA in real international F. I would have never done this a few years ago. All would have been on DL.

It's really just a different mind-set I have now. I was loyal to DL for years, loved it when DM come out then they deflated it with rollover so I looked for other options and now like having DL/AA top tier.

Should have made a video of it and put it and start a porn site, "GoingForTheGold.com" or "FlyingTheFriendlySkys.com" and charge $19.95 a month. That would pay for all your travel in F, and make it deductible because you are searching for more material for the web site.

@:-)

Delta MQM purchase 2012 offered?

Anyone with insight as to whether Delta will offer up to 10k MQMs to be purchased towards the end of 2012 as it has done over last few years?

MR_MAMA Sep 23, 2012 5:31 pm

No one knows at this point, last year they announced it on 11/29

StayingHomeIsBetter Sep 23, 2012 5:55 pm

This year there will be a fixed number of MQMs available, total, and they will be auctioning them to the highest bidder in 1000 mile lots.

(... just kidding, but barely. :D )
