Is a 17K mile trip worth 500K points?

So we're planning a trip to Africa this winter. I'll spend a million points to get us both there and back in Business Is it worth it? Or would you spend the $8000 for 2 tickets and upgrade?

There's not enough information here. Origin and destination(s)? Upgrade availability confirmed or merely speculative? What segment(s) in your proposed routing are not in Low award band such that this prices so high? Flexibility for travel dates? Refusal to fly certain carriers or make more than x stops?

To try to answer the question as asked, even one cent per mile, a million miles are worth $10,000, but I agree that we need details to evaluate options.

And is the OP sitting on a mammoth mound of miles?
Is the poster short on cash at the moment?

I could go on and on with other questions that need to be asked in order to provide an educated opinion here. It's like trying to solve a page long equation with zero known variables....

What would it cost to use miles (or SWUs if you have them) to upgrade from M+ and is upgrade space available?

Would you contemplate flying ATL-AMS-JNB or ATL-CDG-JNB? Did you check? ExpertFlyer or a Flying Blue account make quick work of checking.

Find a low Business award US49-S Africa and it's 140K/person.

High/high is 'only' 380K so 500K/person is a mystery.

If you are flexible on dates with mid to late 11/12 in mind, routing ATL-JNB on DL metal there are multiple dates with medium level availability. That prices at 250k per person in business for a direct flight. You don't have to go out of your way to find it, just use the DL site and award calendar.

If you want to try for low level award, you might try routing through Europe and using AF or KL to get to South Africa.

If you are set on the trip, and set on going in Business then I would say that 250k points per ticket is worth saving the $8k and trying for an upgrade.

There must be some connecting flights not in high FC that are pricing additively. Or maybe two stopovers so that it's two award tickets.

If you can confirm the upgrades with miles, IMO this would be much better than half a million miles per ticket.

Sounds like a waste of miles. I used NW/DL miles to fly US-AMS-CPT a few years back. 120k miles was reasonable. 500k is not reasonable. Heck, you can do a RTW for 280k or so.

OP, are you sure that the TOTAL price for 2 tix wasn't 500k, rather than it being 500k each. ATL-JNB is a direct flight so even DL's terrible award engine isn't likely to screw up the pricing.

If you are truly willing to pay $4k per ticket, the. Redeeming for medium level for 250k miles per ticket is worthwhile, IMO. In this case you are getting a value of $0.016 per mile which is a fair value for DL miles.

If you don't have the time or know how to search the various partner airlines and routings, you might benefit from using one of the many reputable award booking services to get you there for 140k miles each.

It's a choice of $4000 plus miles to upgrade but earn 150% miles versus 250,000 miles and earn no redeemable miles or MQMs on the trip, assuming that the rates are $4000 per person for M and 250,000 per person for the award ticket. You could also do one of each if one person needs the MQMs.
