The LAX T5 - T6 Tunnel - more than you ever wanted to know

Nice...I flew out of T6 a couple of weeks ago. There were two people driving carts back and forth between T5 and T6 for pax transiting from one to the other...I just chose to walk. :)

As bad as that tunnel and the physical condition of LAX is, I do have to give DL credit for doing some things to improve that tunnel last year. There is signage, new paint and spaced every few yards are horizontal images of DL destinations along the main part of the tunnel.

Just went through there on Sunday...I agree, I think Delta's done a good job with it, adding signs and golf carts for those that want them.

Years ago, all of the tunnels from the gates to baggage claim looked like this too.

I seem to remember taking this tunnel on an LAX-DTW red-eye, and being called to boarding in the SC. It was that exact feeling... is this the place to walk down, are we heading in the correct direction, etc? And then when you got to the gate, the terminal was under construction. Not exactly a great way to leave the city.

Yes, the back half of T6 is a bit of a mess.

I once got sent back and forth between the terminals because of a change of gates/planes. The first time I walked it. The 2nd time I jumped on the cart, and the cart died about 1/4 of the way. So, I ended up walking most of it again.

Not quite. Some of those tunnels, pre-"Oasis", had white terazzo floors, walls of colored tile and weird louvered light diffusers. There is a good example of the tunnels in the opening sequence from "Jackie Brown" a good part of which was shot in T5.

Not sure when Jackie Brown was filmed, but it had to be after the mid-80s, as that is when Western (then Delta) transformed T5 into what you see in the movie (and today). I'm thinking further back...I grew up with tunnels much similar to those in the Graduate. There was nothing more inspiring than coming from LHR in T2 on PanAm, then getting the stairs to unload a 747, then heading through the long tunnel after immigration. Very bunker-like.

Is the "security curtain" with the overly dramatic warning signage still there in the middle?

I love the tunnel. It feels creepy and like a secret. Plus, it's nice to get some exercise between flights. I always walk it and stop in the middle to look each way.

Doing a little research, there is a video of the tunnel at T3. It appears that one wall was colored tile and the other was white tile. I was a Western flyer and I am pretty sure the colored tile mosaic was in place.

Here is T4 (American) and is where the Jackie Brown sequence was shot. The T5 tunnel never had an escalator.
