NEW FARE CLASS: Basic Economy (E)
I was on .com booking a flight from AUS-FLL and noticed a new fare type displayed on the web page as a third column to the right of first class: Basic Economy (E).
Never saw this before and according to the web site: "Basic Economy (E booking class) is our newest and lowest fare offering. When you purchase Basic Economy, you will enjoy our lowest available fare, but you will not be able to select your seat in advance nor change or refund your ticket after the Risk Free Cancellation period."
They go on to add "Basic Economy offers a new choice for travelers who, first and foremost, want the lowest fare. The fare is a great option for those passengers who do not plan to change their ticket and who put less of a value on having an advance seat assignment."
From what else I could tell:
1. Elites are not exempt from the no seat assignment standard. .com says that elites will be assigned a seat at check in.
2. NO changes allowed but standard rules for SDC apply.
3. Risk-free cancellation applies.
Best part of all of this was that the "basic Economy" fare was $148 MORE than the "Economy" (V) fare. Pay more and get less. Gotta love it.
Mods: If this has already been discussed somewhere feel free to merge.
