Why do people do mileage runs these days?

Here's another point I have: if you have to take mileage runs to maintain status, there's really no point to having that level of status as it doesn't fit your needs. That said, if you are say 4,000 EQMs away then a mileage run makes sense. But if you're like a friend of mine who is mileage running for 75,000 EQMS to keep 1K then that's just insane

At the same time - one could make the argument that if an international long haul trip gets cancelled, you're out 20k MQM, so perhaps one might do a MR to make it up.
