I travel back and forth to the USA a ton. I routinely bump into airfares >1000.00. Especially when going out west where the planes are smaller.

I don't know what your point is. There is plenty of availability on those days for half the price, and one third the price if you are willing to move the days by one on either side. This is the beginning of spring break at Georgia Tech, and maybe other colleges in Atlanta.

Lowest published fare for the date and route is an L fare for $814.00.

Your outbound only has Y available so it is pricing at the Y fare. Your return is likely pricing at the above L or a lower U fare ($672 but not available for your departure date).

Looks like there are fares as low as $274 available via CO/UA but those will require a connection.

Have you considered BUF and then MegaBus to Toronto (picks up at BUF airport)? Looks like Delta and AirTran offer flights between $279 to $474. Add on the $31.50 MegaBus fare and you are still ahead ($ wise anyway, but this will take you a few more hours each way).

My recent experience flying into Canada from USA cities...
1- try to fly to a border city and drive in (BUF?)
2- I've done mixed cities and even cut the cost (fly into Canadian city, out of US border city, and done one way car rental; most of the big agencies on the border cities are used to this thing)
3- and finally, last summer I was so ticked off at the high price of GRR-YUL ($900+) that I used a award ticket for 25k miles; I thought it was a great use of miles compared to other uses of miles

I was checking fare for hubby. These are the only times he could travel. Surprised that ATL-YYZ could be that high. In coach and not last minute booking either. Guess ATL-BUF $299.00 it is.

My suggestion, fly into DTW and make the drive into Toronto. It is a relatively painless process. And the savings can be quite substantial. I have clients in Toronto area and routinely save about 6-800 bucks by flying into DTW.

You could do ATL/BTV starting at $360, but, the schedule isn't too great, since there aren't any nonstops.

It's an easy drive from BTV to Montreal. I've done it many, MANY times - - especially since fares into Canadian cities have gotten outrageous the last few years!

Yeah, Toronto is an easy drive from BUF.

AIr Canada is $1436.17 for the times you are requesting.

I have found BUF to be cheaper, but more expensive than DTW. As far as distance, it depends upon where you are going in Toronto. Most of my stuff is on the NW side. The drive on the 401 or 402 is pretty nice going through some countryside.

Your flying dates are also school break in YYZ.

I have never paid close to that on L/U/T TPAC fares going from YYZ via ATL

Aim for BUF.

I have family in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and fly there regularly. BUF is always significantly cheaper and this includes rental car pricing. Even Canadians know this and the parking lot is full of Ontario license plates and you will see lots of Canadian passports used for ID at TSA @ BUF.

DTW - GTA = 5 hour drive
BUF - GTA = 2 hour drive

(although the QEW - interstate like highway connecting Niagara region to GTA, can be very busy depending on time of day.)

Another benefit of driving across the border is not having to deal with airport security for flights back to US. You are considered INTL inbound to US which has relaxed some from the peak of insanity but still a lot more difficult compared to driving across the border and just dealing with normal domestic TSA security.
