so expensive!

Delta has gotten so expensive in the last 6 months unless I wanna fly Tuesday to Tuesday!

They must be making some coin.

Not investment advice!

See their latest earnings. You are correct.

They've finally got capacity close to right - without serious planning, it can be a shock compared to the airfares of the past few years. I am, however, happy to see a profitable carrier.

They are still cheapest SEA - AMS i believe.
where are they expensive? (so i can avoid :))

I had a supervisor once who passed along to me the guidance, "where you stand depends on where you sit".

Planning has not much to do with it. There is a modicum of good competition in DTW to keep Delta fares in check. In ATL Air Tran and now Southwest exist to keep Delta fares in check and in much of the south USairways keeps Delta in check.

With all due respect those in the more competitive parts of the Delta network don't fully understand what is going on with pricing in the other parts of the network with more monopolistic concentration.

It has gotten bad enough that I have been forced to take other carriers or flights with layovers. Company policy.

Singleflyer Jan 26, 2012 6:19 am

I also like to see a profitable carrier.

I have some very expensive tickets, I usually have K,Q,M fares and last year the cost per mile was approx $0.48 per mile flown. A very expensive one about a M fare is CHS-ATL-BHM-ATL-CHS that was about $1,000.00

And the RT mileage flown is under 800 miles

DLdweeb Jan 26, 2012 6:21 am

Indeed they have jacked up the fares, and apparently there is no shortage of people willing to pay these prices. Good for them, but I can't see how it will last.

Deemus7 Jan 26, 2012 6:28 am

I've been noticing a lot of the same. $500-$700 for sLUT fares from MCO to various points in the SE (including LIT, HSV, BHM, and MGM) to name a few. I even checked a month and then two months after my preferred dates to see if advance planning made a difference, and the fares were identical. Here's hoping my company raises my budget this year!! I really don't want to fly UScareways...

On the other hand, I am seeing similarly high fares on other carriers, so it doesn't appear to be a Delta-specific phenomenon. I just can't justify a $500 Delta ticket when US has one with similar times for $375.

Not me.:td: After zipping through half the globe for practically nothing I ain't in the mood to pay a premium for what is left. If the airlines keep raising fares, I'll be staycationing on cruise ships. At least they haul your dive gear around from site to site without baggage fees.:p

Not

My company policy requires that I take a cheaper flight with a connection if it's more than $200 less than a nonstop. Would you be flying other carriers if you had the same policy? Just curious because we both fly out of MSP.

+1

Since they've got us down to basically three major carriers, it's become a lot easier to keep fares up. Competition? What's that?

I'll observe that the earnings also include the results of first-class upsell, but like the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, First-Class Monetization is that-which-shall-not-be-named.

As capacity continues to shrink, and fuel costs continue to increase, the airlines actually have pricing power. Flying will continue to become more and more expensive, pricing more and more people out of the market.
