upgrades on miles ticket
 
I booked a flight for my wife and i and used miles. We are going to hawaii and would love to get upgraded. I am gold. Do i just ask the gate agent? Any ideas would be helpfull.

No comp upgrades to Hawaii (on either revenue or award tickets). If you are on ATL-HNL, you can choose the EC seats for free (but they are treated as normal seats on domestic flights -- so no free booze). If you wanted first, you should have spent more miles.

OP, UG's to Hawaii only occur with SWU's or mileage upgrades. Or you can try your luck with the pay at gate, but often the UG's go to elites using SWU's or miles first.
