They give you a nicer seat then treat you like crap when you get up there. How would you feel if the FA told you in front of the other passengers, "we're just giving you the seat, you don't get any of the food or drinks others in BE get." If it applies to drink why not food too? Would you like to eat the crappy Y meal while everyone else around you is enjoying (relatively) quality food and drink? (And for that matter, why should they allow you to recline your seat more than a Y seat?) That singling out of those who didn't pay embarrasses the passenger and is horrible customer service.

DL benefits from the op-up by not having to pay you cash for an IDB. If they're going to treat you like crap they should give you a choice--OP indicated he wasn't given any choice about his op-up. The agent should say, "Coach is full, so you can move up to BE for free, but you get the seat only and no other perk like the alcohol or good food or amenity pack." Then the pax has a chance to decline to be treated like crap and the agent can offer the poor treatment to some other sucker.

I understand that Delta will most often NOT upgrade folks from Y with special meal requests in their PNR. The reason? They say that they cannot serve the Y product (the catered special meal) in C.

They can't have it both ways - either you get the (full) C product or not. And apparently their rule is not to serve the Y product up front. I know this has come up before on the boards here, particularly peretaining to op-ups and special meals (ordered in Y).

Sounds like you had a bad crew.

DL FA's still have a hard time with the whole world-class business class service concept. Most of what you described sounds like laziness to me.

I recently flew BE ATL-DXB round trip ($9600) and the service was not good.

While DL business class is competitive within the offerings of US airlines it does not compete on the world stage.

I'm not sure that this is the fault of the FAs vs DL. Does DL have a world-class offering, does DL train their FAs appropriately, and does DL monitor the service delivered?

BusinessElite should be re-branded to PigglyWigglyFliesLieFlatOnPleather. The messy, over-crowded SkyClubs are a joke, the stark blue and white cabins are awful, saying Ni How Dee upon arrival in PVG is unacceptable, those new Lav Floor trays are disgusting, the food is mediocre, and the world class cultural awareness is sub-par.

I really think the FAs for the most part are doing the best they can. They need a world class environment to work in, tools to do their job, reinforcing training, and for some, clear expectations or you're out.

BusinessElite needs a total refresh.

Drop a note about that as it's not SOP. IIRC Itsaboutthejourney has had issues with getting the right bubbles in air before.

He always seems to have issues

There is a difference between the PDB sparkling wine and the inflight champagne. Some FAs (and friends from Chainlando?) apparently don't understand the difference. @:-) [my other pet peeve is FAs not putting the champers on ice when doing PD prep]

I understand that some FAs may be thinking they are doing their best by using up all the PDB stuff before opening the champagne, but if inflight isn't stocking enough of the champagne then Delta should know about it rather than have FAs solve the problem with a sub-par product/detail.

I got an opup couple of years ago even though I had a special meal. The fa appologizd that they didn't have the j special meal since there was no time to get it for me. I said its fine, just give me the y special meal. They were very nice to me the whole flight, knowing I was an opup. (The whole cabin was opup'd, the guy next to me was opup'd even though he was a fo on CO, it was skyteam them.)

I had an interesting experience a couple of weeks ago flying to CDG. A husband and wife were not assigned seats together in BE. I was sitting by him. He asked me if I would swap with his wife and although it was the last row which I do not prefer, I swapped anyway. When the FA came around asking for menu selections, he noticed that I had changed seats. When I told him I swapped seats so the couple could sit together, he went and jumped all over the guy that asked. Turned out he was a NRSA and he was told in no uncertain terms that asking this was not acceptable and against policy. He actually got an attitude from the FA for the entire flight. No big deal to me though.

Well at least he didn't offer to store someone's carry-on under the seat in front of you (did he?)
