I believe this is still the technology used for DL's online award flight booking engine.
Actually, the award booking engine is based upon an abacus.

Mine is a 6 followed by my old NW number (with the last digit changed, so I'm assuming it's a check digit). I set up accounts for the rest of the family this week, and they all got 9xx numbers -- but nowhere near consecutive: my son's number starts 9305, and my daughter's starts 9155.

Nope, mine starts with a 4 and I never had a Pan Am account. I enrolled in the 80's. ugh

Wish they would have done the same with mine. Dirty Rat B*stards gave me one starting with 6 that has no resemblance to what my WP number was.

Mine is my exact same NW WP number with a 6 in front. Very convenient and easy to remember.

Even my American Airlines number has no letters in it which is semi rare.
Mine also (both of those). Late 1970's, I think.

Interesting. Had no idea that the reason mine starts with 40 is 'cause I had a number for Pan AM.

Not quite. Texas International started FFPs in the '70s, though AA was the first of the widely recognizable names to jump on the bandwagon and take off with the idea.
