Thank you for all the great recommendations. Even after breaking down into two separate pieces, they would barely fit in my Kirkland 30" from corner to corner. It left one end exposed at the top of the bag, and I was quite afraid of them getting damaged. I will check on a couple of the box/tube options when I fly back next Saturday. I knew you all would be a wealth of info for this lowly GM!

These will breakdown to only 19 inches, which carry on rules allow. Putting them back together you end up with a solid, but light 55 inch wood waking stick:
