Also I wonder why you never see FCM on the premium transcon routes, like JFK to LAX. If the price was fair, I would consider doing it.

They don't do it at the gate, but you can buy discount biz fares (usually "I" class) that are non-refundable for less than $2k RT. Not a bad deal given the product and that full Y is way more than that. I buy these "I" fares all of the time. Full J is something crazy like $4k.

If you compare to what United charges for their PS service (inferior, IMO) JFK-SFO/LAX, DL is a pretty good deal. My bro works for an investment bank and of course they pay for full J/F on UA. His last trip to the west coast JFK-SFO in J was $5500. F priced out at almost $9k.

I'm referring to future itineraries that show up in your delta.com account. I have three domestic flights up coming and all of them except the jfk to lax offer me the chance to upgrade to first.

I am currently pricing out jfk to lax in J, non stop in April, for $1334.00 RT AI. Not bad.

For as low as $1,198 you can fly JetBlue Mint, arguably the current best transcon premium product, especially if you can get the closed door suites in rows 2 and 4.

DTW to Orlando was around $75 each way. And as some pointed out up thread without status that is really $50 each way if you have to bring a bag. It is only a two hour flight, but I took it. I've noticed from my pattern of acceptance and decline in the last year I am willing to pay $20-30 per hour for first and on short flights that often seems to be the rate.

no way man. Would never fly JetBlue MINT. To many cons to the pros. They're just to amateurish at the game. However, I will take my hat off to B6; thanks to that low price, I can get that Delta fare for a song and a dance.

Email replies from Delta to 2 of my Diamond friends regarding the eFirst (FCM) program when they asked Delta why their upgrade percentages were so low this year:

We are very sorry to hear that this new program is causing you to look at flying with other airlines. Offering these upgrades for purchase gives our customers the opportunity to buy first class seats that may have previously gone to a Medallion member as a Complimentary Medallion upgrade. It is easy to understand why this would impact you, especially with the number of flights you take annually. As you mentioned, this does generate some revenue as well as invigorates the perceived value of our first class seats. This change is not intended to alienate our bread and butter customers.. We created a strong customer base by offering generous benefits to our most frequent travelers. The benefits are not changing, but we are viewing them from a different angle.

We have started offering eFirst upgrades to our medallion members when they check in using the Delta app. If available, upgrades can be purchased with miles or money. Our general SkyMiles members may be offered the opportunity to purchase an upgrade when checking in online, using the app, or at the airport kiosk. We are sorry that you think this is unfair and a way for us to squeeze more money out of our Medallion flyers.

GEG-SLC A319. They wanted $179 one way. Passed.

Even better offer for me. LGA-SDF-LGA RT booked for Monday on an ER-145. A look at the itinerary had the following banner:

"UPGRADE TO FIRST CLASS
Enjoy our best service and Sky PriorityŽ.on this flight.
$463 (USD) per passenger - entire trip*
*total price including taxes and fees"

That got me interested. Had they upgauged from that miserable 145? So I clicked and got this:

"YOU'RE ON THE WAY TO FIRST CLASS
Select your First Class seat or let us choose for you. After purchase, you can view and change your seat assignment in My Trips. Select Seats"

So I clicked on that and got the usual seat map for the usual 145 with the legend:

"This segment of your trip is on an aircraft without a first-class cabin. Your current Economy seat will remain assigned."

But Dude, all of the segments of this trip are "on an aircraft without a first-class cabin." What are you selling me for "$463 (USD)?"

FCM indeed. Sounds to me like an effort to institute ERJ Monetization. :D

Did DM#1 actually suggest that FCM ".... invigorates the perceived value of our first class seats"?

These 2 quotes in my original post were the actual email replies from Delta to 2 of my Diamond friends. I just put the quotes around the actual copy/paste of the emails to separate them.

I understand. My comment was that the DL response to DM#1 was phrased so as to suggest that DM#1 in his/her complaint to DL had suggested that FCM "invigorates the perceived value of our first class seat".

I anticipate that DM#1 did not make such an assertion and that the DL respondent was putting a typically DL spin on the content of the original complaint.

So, does Delta ever lower the FCM price on day of check in? Right now, they are asking $306.00 to upgrade me on an upcoming itinerary that is two weeks from today. Might I see a lower amount at check in?

I fly domestically almost every week and have only gotten the offer twice. You might not even get an offer at check in.

cfabar1 Feb 14, 2015 5:09 pm

Another disappointing change. Delta really has no desire to develop skymiles. They devalue it every week.

playbbg Feb 14, 2015 5:45 pm

I am a Platinum and am flying DTW-SEA-PDX-SLC-DTW in a few weeks. THe DTW-SEA is on an A330-200 and the SLC-DTW is a red eye. I am on L fares the way out and H fares the way home. The original fare was $780. I was offered to upgrade the whole trip for $240 and took it. Lay flat seats for 5 hours on the way out and more space for a red eye on the way back will make it more than worth it. This seemed a bit low considering the fare class. i would have expected north of $500, all things considered.

NotHamSarnie Feb 14, 2015 6:06 pm

As long as nobody falls for it we're all ok and we get our gate UGs. Hang tight!
