DL 68 ATL to CPH Diverted to Empty Lavatories 6/11

Interesting story from my aunt...

Delta 68 from ATL to CPH was diverted to St. John's (YYT) on 6/11 because they had forgotten to empty the lavatory tanks in Atlanta. She says it resulted in a 4 hour delay getting into CPH. She was very aggravated, no doubt.

Anyone else onboard? How this could happen? I feel like there should be a master checklist before a plane leaves.

Just thought I'd share with you all....

Hell, they could have dropped it over Newark and then sent them a bill for making it nicer....

They probably don't have poop release valves the way they have gas release valves.

I could just hear that conversation.. "Tower, this is Delta XXX. We were forced to take a dump over the Atlantic. Over."

Oh man, I wish I could foresee something like that for an upcoming trip to YYT that I have on the calendar for this October. DL doesn't fly there so I have to do the multiple-airline shuffle (over multiple days) to get up there from my GPT home base.

Sounds like there may have been a maintenance issue with the lavs that developed in flight. Lavs are serviced prior to flight. Unusual to divert unless it was an issue that meant they may not work the remainder of the flight. Of course I wasn't on the flight, just my two cents. Would be interesting to see the flight record to get the poop, I mean scoop.

My aunt said specifically that the flight attendents and captain came on the intercom and said it was because they had not been emptied in Atlanta...very weird haha I feel like that should be standard procedure haha

Given the frequent conversations between on-board crew & ATL ops/ramp tower regarding lavs when planes are being turned/prepped, odd this one slipped by. From stories I've heard, some of those conversations would definitely not be the type of language we'd want to see here.
