Selecting different fare classes for each segment. Possible?
 

Is it possible (on delta.com) to select different fare classes for different segments? For example, for a trip to London, I want to select Economy (LUT......) for the domestic segment to BOS and then BE (I) class for BOS-LHR. Likewise on the way back.

If not possible on Delta.com can I call the PM line and ask for this?

Not possible unfortunately. You can use a tool like matrix1.itasoftware.com to price out the domestic legs at the lowest fare and then the overwater at M to see what it should price. But you would need to call to book. In some cases, the M fare domestically is roughly the same as the total M fare so it may not be worth calling.

I asked the GM desk about this, and you can have them book different clases of service. I was looking at M on my long-hauls so I could use Skypesos for upgrades...unfortunately, even with no seats showing occupied in BE, I couldn't upgrade. Go figure.

Called PM line and they were able to book T for the domestic leg to BOS and then I for BOS-LHR. Did this last night... this morning the I fares for BOS-LHR doubled!

How much was saved by doing this if you don't mind me asking? The times I have looked it has saved $200-$250 which wasn't worth the loss in MQMs and upgrade ability on the domestic segments.

+1... all depends on your routing and the fares available. This doesn't always save as much $$$ as you'd think, and in some cases it can be more expensive. When you ask them to break the fare like this, it means you're essentially buying two tickets: XXX-BOS-XXX and BOS-LHR-BOS. The only way you come out ahead is if the XXX-LHR-XXX ticket in business is more expensive than the BOS-LHR-BOS ticket by at least the amount the XXX-BOS-XXX ticket costs.

I did the same, booking MIA-LHR in I and domestic legs in T. The promo for I fares from BOS and MIA to LHR were published originally with last booking date March 16, then extended to March 31.

Being able to book online, selecting a fare category for each leg, would be useful.

Inbound and outbound can be in different fare classes. In general, the lowest fare class available on all segments of a trip (one-way) determines fare basis for the one way portion. For example if two of three segments of inbound are available in T class and one is available only in L, the inbound portion of the trip will price at L.
