FA call button..

...response ratio.

In the past year or so the times I've pressed the call button MAYBE 2 - 10x were acknowledged by an FA. The other times I've had to flag the FA as they walk by me, after 1 or 2 have done so before them and it appears to be chore for them. I can understand when they are busy, need a break and whatever else you wish to insert here so I'd ignore one FA walking by, but this should not happen they are Customer Service Personnel and should tend to every px as called upon, unless it is unsafe.

What's triggered my post and shortly email/letter to Dl is the last FA's response: "We were tending to the Duty Free service".. I replied to her "Was that you chatting with you're fellow FA "in front of me"? On average I've waited for at least 15 minutes and 1 to 2 FA's walking by me before I say something. Also, I usually sit by the window and avoid getting up if the person next to me is sleeping, thus the need for the FA to come to me. To be honest that should not matter. Yes, this is in Economy in Biz/FC I've never pressed the button, since they are frequently checking the cabin.

On a side note does the px list note where FF's sit?

In the past 10 years, perhaps 1,000 DL flights, I've hit the FA call button exactly zero times. You seem to be very needy.

mersk862 Jan 22, 2011 8:19 pm

I've hit it once in maybe 500 flights over the past five years. And that's only because the girl next to me was vomiting all over the aisle.

I never hit the FA call button, why are you pressing it so much?

Sorry OP, guess I'm like the others. Don't think I have ever needed to use a call button. Can't imagine how many times you used it if you say only 2-10 were successful.

Nice air etiquette to allow the aisle pax to sleep but is it really necessary to call the FA so often? Guess I can't relate to this.

Also can't relate to this happening in Economy. As a DM, you should be in the front of the bus like me.

But to answer your question, yes the FA's know the status of everyone on the flt so to answer the pressing underlying question, yes they Know Who You Are.

I also never use the call button. If it is a true emergency and I need a FA I'll get out of my seat and find one - I'm not going to test their "response time."

If it is not any sort of emergency I'm happy to wait until one wanders by my seat or if I feel really impatient I will go to them and ask for whatever I want.

The only scenario I have seen where I think the button was used appropriately was when small children are being tended to and a passenger needed help but could not leave their seat because of the situation the child was in (getting sick, sleeping on a parents lap etc).

I think the buttons are really a relic of the past.

During my adult life I have never used the FA call button.

Gargoyle Jan 22, 2011 8:52 pm

I'm not sure, but I vaguely recall pressing the call button by accident one time many years ago. If so, that's the only time I've every pushed it.

waltinsocal Jan 22, 2011 8:56 pm

Not to pile on, and for the sake of providing a completely civil response, I will simply say that in 15 years of flying many airlines, I have never even considered touching the call button. However.......nope.......I will stop before my dark side takes over.

To the OP: I think I understand the general "gist" of the thread you have created; but the specific details are escaping me because your post is a bit confusing. When you have a moment of clarity, can you go back to your original post, hit the "edit" button and straighten out the specifics???

I suppose this is directed to others that have felt the need to call an FA, be it for a drink, meal, a problem with the audio jack, video monitor, air vent not working, you were sleeping while they went thru the cabin with the meal/drink service. Whatever you're reason so be it. If a button is there and a person presses it, the expected action is an answer. Should you dial in to the support line once a day, you expect someone to answer the call and assist you and all you could be doing is price checking thus you're not even generating any revenue. When in a flight for an avg of 4+ hours one way some people may need some assistance.

The underlying question is the support responsiveness. I as with any other pax should be assisted as needed. Where one sits should not matter. WAS it 10x, 5x, 20x in the past year I pressed it and expected some help not a lie that she was busy. That is the real issue.

I would guess over 90% of the FA call button presses are accidents.

Most of the rest are when one is trapped in the window seat with 2 sleeping 300 pounders in the aisle and window, the seat belt light having been on for 3 straight hours, and one is choking a pretzel crumb.

I will agree with a post above that the OP seems to be very needy, and probably really enjoys being waited upon.

Without passing judgment on the OP, let me join the chorus and say that in nearly 2MM miles of BIS flying, I have never pressed the call button. Ten times in a year seems somewhat over the top.

This gives me an idea when in F and there's no preflight drink service I'm going to push the button every five minutes throughout the flight demanding that I get another drink, maybe I'll get someone to sell me their diamond tags and put them on my luggage as well
